I think Napo is blowing it. I read that she'd asked for the head of the Geographic Name Change person to resign when he didn't go along with her request to dispense with the 5 year waiting period for naming a landmark after some who is deceased. I think he's a volunteer and holds his position for 5 years. She's turning this into a power play instead of a tribute. I got this from a conservative newsletter in the East Valley today:
If you read the Tribune, front page, it shows we have a governor who thinks she is above the law. The article did not mention it but the Board on Geographic and Historic names is composed of the six people plus a number of community members according to KFYI. The community members were not invited to the meeting and were not allowed to vote which is illegal.

Your correct.

She's pandering to the Indian vote, and she's forcing others to break the law to do it.

Unfortunately, she has tarnished the image of Lori Piestewa.

Twenty years from now, when someone mentions Lori Piestewa, the majority of people will remember the Governors pandering and railroading the “Rule of Law” as opposed to the sacrifice Lori Piestewa made.

Amazing Grace always makes me cry...and I've already cried once tonight. Once is enough. But thanks for the ping.

Re-naming Squaw Peak is politics as usual.

I understand. You're welcomed.

That's what I heard too. Here is an article dealing with that:

!!!!!

i wish the people behind changing the name of the mountain had ask the HOPIs how they feel about this prior to doing so.

MOST Hopi holy men think that naming a mountain after a PERSON is not in keeping with their tribal religious traditions.

There's a little argument in my household over the name "Squaw." I say it was a legitimate Indian name for a grown woman. My spouse says it is derogatory to them. (He usually knows these things)

Exactly, Marine Inspector...Lori deserves honor indeed, but not for the oppotunity to further the democrat govenor's political career...And beleive me, that's the motivating factor, otherwise this would have been handled in an upright and just manner.

Up until this fiasco started, I had no idea either.

I spent about 8 hours reading everything I could about the subject.

It's actually quite fascinating.

Unfortunately the Governor has turned the whole thing into a political football to gain votes.
