I work with kids at 45 different school locations and I can tell you .. the number of kids that are medicated is astounding.. mainly boys. There are so many children that have a terrible time controlling behavior.. When we address behavioral issues with some of the parents .. they tend to say in the presence of their children, that they can't help it.. that either they are on new meds.. they forgot their meds or we should excuse their poor behavior because they are ADHD and that it's part of their 'diagnosis'.. kids are given a pass..

One additional thing, if these kids are diagnosed as ADHD ..they are classified as special needs.. the schools received additional funding for special needs kids and it is in the best interest of the schools to have special needs kids identified.

__There are so many children that have a terrible time controlling behavior.. __

Which became a problem not too long after the schools stopped dispensing "hacks."

Maybe a return to corporal punishment would resolve a lot of this "problem."

And no, I am not kidding.

I have a new friend who has been having trouble with her teen son. Finally, she told me he has been diagnosed with ADHD and she was going to medicate him. Well, we were over for dinner last week, and I can tell you that all this kid needed was a smack in the face. He was the most disrespectful, snotty piece of crap I'd ever seen. The parents did nothing as he sat in front of family and friends insulting them. Finally, I couldn't take it. I got up, asked him to show me where the bathroom was. I pushed him in the bathroom and gave him a piece of my mind. The first thing he told me was that he was going to "sue" me. I told him to "bring it on". After telling him EXACTLY what I thought of him, I INSISTED that he apologize to his father and to everyone at the table for his cowardly and mean remarks. His parents were THRILLED I did this. Apparently, they've never tried this strategy before. I guess takinw away one of his TWO cars was the extent of his punishment in the past. She told me the next day that I did what they had been unable to do for years. I felt very sad for them.

And on the other side of the coin there are parents like myself who currently have a son with autistic tendencies in a preschool program and I have implored the teachers to offere suggestions or referrals to info where I can learn more about dealing with the rages and extreme behavior that comes with not only being a boy, but being an autistic boy. I get no response. I can tell you out of frustration, as someone in a hypertensive pregnancy, I have thought more than once of just taking him to the hospital psychologist who originally evaluated him and oking the meds. It gets hard to deal with the extremes that do come along with some neurological illnesses. I never wanted to medicate my son, but when you reach out and get nothing back to help you deal with a child who follows you screaming and if you isolate him hurts himself or destroys the house(he's only 4), then you just get to the point where medication sounds awfully nice just to get a break from crying in the bathroom when you can't take anymore.

ps yes, it has been rough with the rages lately!

One of my friends works at a school and she says that in some of the classes, 3/4 of the kids are on some kind of medication.
