Our Position: A big water tower painted like one, complete with worm, would not make a fine city landmark.

The campaign to repaint a 10-story South Sacramento water tower as a big red tomato, complete with tomato worm, makes us remember a guy we knew in grade school who had the unfortunate nickname of Stumblefoot. His height had sprouted faster than his sense of coordination.

Worse, that red tomato flaunts the simple point of what we expect in government (especially when it's teetering on the brink of bankruptcy):

Red paint fades fast. That red tomato would soon be pink.

No matter how appropriate an inedible pink tomato might be to Sacramento, I'll be happier if they save the money for some flippant expenditure like road maintenance.

It's somewhat more acceptable when viewed from other angles...

It has caused some accidents on I-85 as drivers gawked at it rather than keeping their eyes on the road. This prompted the installation of what is surely one of the strangest highway signs ever... a "regulation" interstate highway sign, green with white letters: "TO VIEW PEACH, PROCEED TO EXIT 92."
