Council Refuses To Revisit King Day Decision

Two weeks after voting to reject a paid Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Greenville County Council voted even more definitively Tuesday night not to revisit that decision.

Councilwoman Lottie Gibson's motion to reconsider a vote against two proposals for creating a King holiday was rejected 8-4.

On April 1, seven of the council's 12 members voted against a council-appointed committee's recommendations for a King holiday and voted instead to approve wholesale changes in the county employees' holiday schedule.

Tuesday, Council Chairwoman Phyllis Henderson joined the other seven Republican members in upholding that decision.

"After we had a vote, I was not on the winning side, but I have to respect the process," Henderson told WYFF News 4's Nigel Robertson. "The majority of my colleagues voted the way they voted and frankly I'm ready to move on to other issues."

The decision sounds reasonable, in the circumstances.

I am 55 years old, and there is one thing that I have never understood. In the 1960s, respected conservatives like Barry Goldwater, William F. Buckley, and Jesse Helms, opposed the philosophy of Martin Luther King, because the civil right movement undermined property rights and the freedom of association.

What has changed since then? Have conservatives become politically-correct?

The decision of the City Council of Greenville, has restored the original values that conservatives once believed in. Individual rights, respect for private property, and freedom of association.

They rejected making it a paid holiday. Who gives a fig who it's for, who besides government workers would (could?) get paid to do nothing?

What's up with the all-Republican commitee? You have to have 'rat representation to provide the illusion of debate. Then do what's right.
I use the day to honor everyone who deserves a holiday yet doesn't get one: "Unsung Heroes Day".

Every worker that I know receives paid holidays. Where you from?

One where an employer or a taxpayer wasn't considering and endless pit of money. Costs are real and fantasyland diktats from politicians and bureaucrats do nothing to alleviate the harsh reality of supply and demand.

Black conservative ping

If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)

Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.

I get the King holiday every year. It gives you a needed break in the middle of winter. I appreciate it.

Plenty of people don't get paid holidays.
I get some paid holidays (but not MLK Day). (I don't get any sick days though.)
The issue here in Greenville was not having the holiday, just whether it be a fixed paid day off. County employees will vote for the 5 remaining holidays, and they can still choose to have MLK Day as a paid day off.

Evidently you have never in your life met a self-employed person. Where you from?
