Looking into old City of Rochester epidemics: Unsanitary conditions was a big part of the spread of these tragedies.

Unfortunately, we have a society that says "go to work, go to school", even if you're sick. The result is whole school districts get shut down!! If you're sick or your kids are sick, treat it like a sickness. STAY HOME!!
