Aids eventually gets almost everyone. If you have vast wealth, you can get the high dollar cocktails that supress it like Magic does. He'll eventually go downhill though as the virus mutates and resists. Aids is essentially a death sentance...something Homos don't like to advertise. It just takes 7-10 years.

Actually no...in normal cases it takes 7-10 years before people even need drugs to fight the virus...and there are people who are still healthy after 15 plus years and counting on these drugs.
Sure there is no cure and some are becoming drug resistant..(mostly because they don't take the drugs as instructed)...but so far the new AIDS drugs are proving to work extremely well..and new ones are being developed all the time.

And by the way, it doesn't take vast wealth to get these HIV drugs..they are expensive but no more so than many other medical conditions people live with.
Not only the rich..but the poor who are on public assistance can and do receive these drugs.

"I am monitoring a SARS discussion group. Things are much worse than are being reported."

SARS seems to have some very spooky properties:
* Viral
* Spread via casual contact, possibly aerosol (inhalation vectors are very spooky)
* Very (?) infectious
* Rapid (?) mutation rate
* Significant (?) mortality rate

Can you post any web resources for following this issue? You mentioned a discussion group…

Thought I read that Magic isn't taking any of the drugs. Might explain why he is so fit.

Most of those that die have other health issues. The AIDS people will certainly expire if they get SARS.

People who have AIDS will die from almost ANY opportunist infection...things that are easily fought off among the healthy population can be deadly to AIDS patients.
Therefore something like SARS is really much more of a threat to "AIDS people" than other infectious diseases.

It's a different story for the general population, and those who have health issues other than AIDS...which is a lot of people.

You mean Magic stopped taking his meds? I find that hard to believe. I heard that those who stop taking their AIDS drugs have always seen the disease rebound....

Yes It's True......

THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END AND YOUR ALL GONNA DIE!

SARS: This is basically pneumonia. It’s been reported that in the US, with a population of 280 million, there are about 50,000 deaths each year from pneumonia. That is 137 deaths per day. The world population of 6 billion would translate into 2,932 deaths per day from pneumonia. Now let me see, SARS is an epidemic, a pandemic, holly-cow, it's killing everyone. SARS has killed many less that 1,000 people in a month. And people all over the world are running around with surgical mask over their faces! As the now dead, Bill Cooper used to say these people are “Sheep-people”. This is how you know you are being feed BS!

Epidemic – Pandemic: During the Influenza (Pneumonia) Epidemic of 1918-19 over 30 million died world wide, that’s 41,667 deaths per day. With a world population of about 4.5 billion versus 6 billion today that would mean a daily death toll of 55,556 today.

Now that’s what should be called an epidemic.

I’m not sure that’s real great news. Apologies for sounding so heartless but: The ability to hang around for 15 years, potentially infecting more people, is the downside view.

I happen to just be finishing reading Letters to a young conservative by Dinesh D’Souza (great book) and he tells of running polls when he was working on the Dartmouth Review questioning how to deal with AIDS. The vote came up to have a tattoo on the butt of anyone testing positive. Then they ran polls to vote on what the tattoo should say. The winner: "Abandon hope, all ye who enter" (poking fun at The Left was made into great sport at Dartmouth Review)

I get your point, but my own concern is that due to modern communication technology, we could be seeing the beginning of a "Spanish Influenza" kind of potential here. Note the similarities… Now add in jet planes as a new distribution vector.

Give it time, it will happen. I'm just going by their track record.

Do you know what the statistics were in the beginning of the Epidemic/Pandemic?

It sounds to me like the gay lobby is already feeling threatened by SARS and are downplaying its threat. Here's something from an article at gay.com:

According to the World Health Organization's statistics as of Wednesday, there have been 4,288 reported cases since November. Cases in the United States total 39, with no reported deaths.

Even though no effective drug treatment for SARS exists, Montagnier [the co-discoverer of HIV] was not alarmed about the development of the epidemic, arguing that there are many tools available for tracking and controlling its spread.

"An epidemic where 95 percent of the people survive hasn't got much chance of going very far." He added: "Many more people die from flu every year."

It looks like Aides patients are really the first at risk with their compromised immune systems but it seems no one is safe at any age.

Oh..so when it comes to those who contract diseases that could potentially infect others...the sooner they die the better.

You're right..that is heartless.

This sounds like good news...reason amid the panic over SARS. Is it supposed to offend me that this appears on a gay web site?

These drugs are extremely expensive and obviously people with AIDS don't pay from their own pocket. Everyone pays, in the form of higher insurance or taxes. Meanwhile, people with AIDS can keep giving it to other people. I mean, who gives AIDS to people - those with AIDS or those without AIDS???

I'm not telling you to be offended so please don't be.

I'm just saying that I think it's a matter of time before the AIDS lobby starts feeling threatened by the attention that SARS is getting and believe this could be a step in that direction.

When health officials are sounding all kinds of warning bells, but a guy who is seen as a leading figure in the fight against AIDS blatantly downplays the threat of SARS, I'd say that there's a good chance that it's being done for political reasons.

Now a question for you: What did you mean when you asked whether I thought you should be offended because it came from a gay website? I really do not understand your point.

AIDS kills everyone eventually so far, SARS kills 5.6% of the time, mortality rate stated by the CDC today.

I do hope you are not trying to diminish the severity of this situation and the potential devastating effects this could cause.

Yes, SARS kills anywhere from 3-6% of those infected, compared to nearly 100% with AIDS. The problem with SARS is the extreme contagion. You catch it by breathing the air next to an infected person! Obviously much easier to be infected than AIDS. Without draconian measures, SARS has the potential to infect hundreds of millions around the world in the next few years.

With approximately 6 million dead per hundred million infected, this will cause extreme panic, economic turmoil. This is nothing to diminish. As contagious as this virus is, it could easily infect hundreds of millions just on the Asian continent alone.

The numbers above also assume no changes. If SARS mutates into something deadlier, the numbers go up. It is also possible that SARS could just burn itself out.

Right now this is an extremely serious situation and the numbers and severity of SARS cases is more than likely being under-reported.

Best we all keep on top of this, and boost our immune systems as much as possible, and do not make light of what is happening!!

We may be looking at massive quarantines of entire towns, cities, counties, countries. This situation could escalate out of control quickly. Let us hope that the Asian governments (and the Canadian gov) take massive measures to cut this thing off quickly.

I haven't really been following this story. What I do know is that the death rate from flu and pneumonia in this country is about 20 deaths per day. How do we know that SARS isn't just old fashioned pneumonia?

Exactly. That's what I've been thinking. How does this differ from pneumonia or other cases of influenza? I've spent no time worrying about it.
