COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -- Thousands of invaders have their eyes on Idaho. Or Montana. Or New Hampshire. The Free State Project hopes to persuade thousands of people who support limited government to move to one lightly populated state and rule the land.

It's sad that "top-notch" schools like Yale, actually encourage pipe-dreams.

North Dakota won't win because "no one wants to go out there."Uh, speak for yourself.
Pipe dreams...kinda like a representative republic carved from the wilderness of the New World...maybe we could call it the United States of America...

Actually, it's kind of a neat idea although I don't think that they'll get too far.

This is scarey, the reason these states have a low pop. is that there is no work, duh and the weather ain`t always great.

My point is that any place can thrive where men wish to be thrive.

I think Montana is the best bet. Finally got a speed limit and everyone is rebelling against it. Open container in the car is still legal here! Enterprising people would start their own businesses I suppose.

I grew up on a ranch in Eastern Montana. Spend a winter there and then call me. Better yet, try to find a good non-government job, spend a year there and then tell us about it. Love the place, but my kids liked to eat

They will try to slash taxes for everything except public safety and defense. Somebody clue me in here, what does he mean by "defense"? Public safety I assume already included the police and stuff, but what in terms of a state, would he have to pay for in terms of defense?

bybybill, that is why the Mormons stopped in Salt Lake City- they figured noone else would find it desirable enough to muscle them out of there. That is all they required to throw down roots. (Sorry, but this is what passes as my understanding of Mormon history- no offense.)
Each state, Sonny, must maintain at least to some degree the Nat'l Guard but there are all sorts of liasons that would need to be maintained with the feds (FEMA, public health agencies....
...ah, crap! The more I consider it the more it appears to be a pot smoker's dream. Cripes, the Dept. of Education alone would queer the idea of a free state.

I forgot about the national guard, but I always assumed that the federal agencies in the state, were paid for by the federal government. Fed agency=Fed money. I do see your point, if this agencys are forced on to the state and state has to fund them, can't the state simply just withhold or give bare bones to them?
