Most people do NOT go to the ER; they go to their family doctor.

Fewer people , today, die from pneumonia than they used to. That is what I said and it's a fact.

You keep trying to put words in my mouth and jumping to many a false conclusion. Not even a " nice try " and certainly no cigar.

If one reads a daily newspaper and / or watches the news, then they know about SARS and knew the facts long before any CDC announcement was made. Reading FR isn't the be all and end all, concerning this. :-)

This is just a recycling of the smallpox threads. A lot of hysterics, hot air, and little " light ".

Statesman News Service

NEW DELHI, April 25. – Health authorities today cautioned doctors in states to be watchful when sending samples to government laboratories to test for SARS as reagents are very expensive. But this should not act as a deterrent to doctors who suspect they have a SARS case on their hands. Health ministry officials said: “The situation does not call for knee-jerk reactions and sending samples of everyone who reports with cold, fever and chest congestion... Even today, three-four samples have been received from Gurgaon.

We are not geared up for this,” Dr Shiv Lal, National Institute of Communicable Diseases director, said at a symposium on emerging disorders organised by Delhi Medical Association. The primer used for SARS tests is very expensive: “It costs between Rs 8,000 and Rs 10,000 for a test.”

The Director-General of Health Services, Dr SP Agarwal, said there was still no change in status from yesterday, that is there are four confirmed cases and no probable cases of SARS. Authorities confirmed that there were still several questions remaining unanswered about the disease including all the the methods by which it spreads.

The Delhi Medical Association has set up a task force to coordinate with the government and private practitioners to combat SARS. DMA president Dr Anil Bansal said a seven member task-force would frame guidelines for general practitioners and specialists to diagnose and treat new diseases like SARS.

This task force will educate the medical fraternity every month about diseases which could emerge or re-emerge or occur because of seasonal variation.

Think I will go watch "The Stand"....I have all 6 hours of that on tape....lol Seriously, I think we might escape the big one here.

Been reading all your posts on the other SARS threads but haven't posted much. Keep the faith....we will figure this thing out.

My prognostication: Not bioterrorism, but a product of genetic engineering for purposes of drug development--an experiment gone all too wrong.

Enjoy! I'm waiting for The Omega Man to be returned to the video store. It's a good one too.

I liked the original with Vincent Price better: "The Last Man on Earth".

"The Omega Man"

One of Heston's best! Couldn't tell you how many times I've watched that one. I have quite a selection of Sci-Fi. I always keep wondering why he stays out till dusk just like a vampire stays out til dawn.

Could it be that this is simply a virus that has mutated as a result of so many people getting flu shots? Are there any statistics to show that those who have died were otherwise healthy persons, or were they elderly or weakened by HIV, etc.?

In the US alone, the death toll from ordinary flu surged fourfold from 16,263 in 1976-77 to 64,684 in 1998-99, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. Flu deaths now average about 36,000 a year. That's almost as many as die in automobile accidents. No one in the US has died of SARS. So WHAT is the big deal?

Because the " bad guys " ( mutants ) come out at dusk. How many time did you watch it and not see that ?

It's a good movie. I want to read the book ( novella ), but can't get a copy of it anywhere and have been trying to locate it for years.

Have you ever read the novella ? It's supposedly better than either film made from it.

"Because the " bad guys " ( mutants ) come out at dusk"

Of course I new that, I was comparing it to the vampires at dawn.

I did not know that they had a novella...and I've been reading Sci-fi since I was a kid. It would be an interesting book. Was it written after the movie?

Never seen a copy of it. Did you see the Price version? The scenes at the burning pits were great B movie shots.

I've been reading SciFi since I was a kid too; started with Heinlein, when I was 9.

No, the novella was written before either movie was made. My husband read it, long before we met and told me about it when we went to see " THE OMEGA MAN ". It was part of a book containing short stories and this novella. I have been trying to track it down for at least 30 years now , and still can't find a copy.
