SARS Scare Reaches South Texas LAST UPDATE: 4/25/2003 5:22:41 PM Posted By: Julie Fike

The SARS border scare reached all the way to Laredo. Border agents in South Texas near Freer Friday arrested 17 illegal immigrants. Six of them were Chinese. Agents took the six to a doctor’s hospital in Laredo. They were tested for SARS. Three of the six were given a clean bill of health.

The results are still pending on the other three. Laredo Immigration Assistant Chief George Gunnoe says he believes the final test results later Friday night. Gunnoe says the chances of them having SARS is very low. If all are clear of the disease, severe acute respiratory syndrome, they will immediately face deportation charges.

I saw something new (to me at least) two Mexican diesel locomotives heading east through Rankin,Texas.

I saw one too. It was about a year ago somewhere past Midland - don't really know. I saw this white locomotive with some green and red and thought - 'Goodness, what train line is that? Something new." Yes, it was - it was Mexican!!.

I told my son, who used to make many trips between East Texas and El Paso and he said he had seen them.

Realistically, what would it cost to completely close/control the borders? If one even wanted to do that?

I don't know - but I have a better question - What will it cost if we don't close/control the borders?

Well, let's see. First of all there's the cost of printing the federal bill to cut off federal aid to any minicipality whose police force fails to fully cooperate with the INS. Next, the cost of defending law suits from the INS execs who are fired for not vigorously enforcing the law. Then there is the cost of switching high-security prisons housing violent felon illegal immigrants over to being minimum security priosons for employers who hire illegal immigrants.

Are there some real costs? Sure. But the main cost of stopping queue-jumping illegal immigrants is measured not in dollars, but political will.

DH,

I am really interested in this as I live on this border. I think most people assume they came across from Laredo because of the Laredo Border Patrol. However, looking at the map, they could have come across at Brownsville all the way up to Laredo. Also Alice is north of the Falfurrous check point. Therefore, they made it across the border and the checkpoint.

Americans refuse to wake up to the immigration, open border time bomb.....

AMERICANS are wide awake to the border fiasco. Unfortunately, virtually all of our politicians (except Representative Tancredo) pander to those in corporate management who are more interested in cheap labor than they are in the integrity of the US workforce and US citizenship. Add to that they don't mind one bit that the US workers (many unemployed or underemployed because on non-citizen labor) subsidize this "cheap" corporate labor through taxes paying for services.

If 911 wasn't enough to close the border for a while and figure out who should and who should not be here, expect nothing from those in charge.

In my opinion, support for border control is slowing building. Give it ten years.

As for SARS, once it hits Mexico, this will strengthen support for border control, but will still not be enough to make it a reality. I'm basing that on an expectation that Mexico will manage to institute effective quarantine and infection control when needed. Plus, even if they only do a middling job, the liberals will say that legal entrants from Mexico to the US might also have SARS. Which will be a complete crock, since legal entrants get better medical care while in Mexico.

Which is why those in charge must be defeated when they run for reelection.

The only way to close the borders would be to shoot illegal crossers on site. I know that sounds harsh, but it would be the only way to get the message out. Nice guys finish last.

In addition we need legislation that punishes all social services, schools and employers who give benefits to, enrolls or hires illegals.

Agents took the six to a doctor’s hospital in Laredo. They were tested for SARS Since I'm paying for their medical care, let's also test them for TB, etc.

Anyone believe this news might finally tighten up our borders ???

I sure hope so. Here in Mo. I've seen more Mexican laborers around and who knows if they've been been given a criminal or medical backround check (where are the unions?). The other day some of them were planting trees in front of a Wendys resturant and hit a water main blowing a 50 foot geyser of water into to air. Never seen anything like it. PLEASE LEARN ENGLISH guys before coming up here!

BTW. I plan to boycott that Wendys.

Geeze, and you're in Alaska. They can't just 'run across the border' to Alaska.

Ten years to border control will still be 15 years too late.

Soon the Mexican trucks will be rolling over the border into the good ol' USA. What and whom will be in those trucks along with the Mexican imported goods? Illegal aliens, yes. Drugs, yes. Diseases, probably. A good bribe will always get a ride.

They can't just 'run across the border', but they can pick up a one-way ticket down in L.A. or Seattle or Mex City, paid for by Trident Seafoods, or Peter Pan Seafoods etc etc etc and show up here at Anchorage Intnl to STEAL a job and opportunity meant for a at least a U.S.Citizen, if not a year-'round Alaskan.

And they can get all kinds of help from our local Catholic Social Services, who act like a kind of 'underground-railroad' to help bring pregnant Momma and all the kids, AND Grandma and Grandpa AND the cousins and on and on and on ad infinim.

These people are being schooled by our own Social Workers and other assorted bureaucRATS and bleeding-hearts, on how to w-o-r-k the system to the very max.

And the attitudes of these 'new Illegals' are hard to believe ... sooo BRAZEN and so very In-Your-Face, if you even so much as glance at them while they languish in the grocery aisles, loudly speaking their foreign language and glaring menacingly at any White Man who might need to pass by.

I don't know exactly how they have been so quickly transformed from the careful and secretive Illegal lurkers back in the '60's, to the angry and pushy Illegals of today, but it's not a pretty scene today and a worse picture for the future.

It's long past time we take on these liberal organizations like Catholic Social Services U.S.A. who should be serving AMERICA's deserving, instead of self-servingly and criminally pumping up their numbers with a bunch of Illegal Alien Border-Crashers.

It's been my (limited) experience that govt ALWAYS cuts the stuff that has immediate impact on the public. That way, the public finally 'comes to their senses' and says 'Gee, we really DO need to raise taxes!' This time around, maybe things are bad enough that that ploy won't work. I can hope, right?

Exactly what the hell is it going to take for us to finally give a damn about who enters this country?

1) Pigs flying.
2) Total economic chaos.
3) Mexican or Canadian Armored columns [chuckle] approaching.
4) The possibility of A WHOLE CRAPLOAD of us dying from some nasty disease, and it can't be a slow one either so TB is out and possibly SARS too...

I had an apptmt to meet with someone housed in the same building as our local Laborers Union, and as I was waiting for my guy to arrive I happened to notice some of their local Union literature laying out.

I almost fell over when I realized one entire (national fancy-type) sheet was glossy printed in Espanol.

As an American citizen, I tried to draw as much attention to this travesty as possible without getting tossed out, but I was pissed.

If I were a member of that union I'd have the next meeting at a FULL BOIL.

I may yet find a way to stir up some trouble over that blatant piece of betrayal.
