>>STILL scratching my head over the "she even sent me a letter" part. It's mind-boggling!<<
I have pondered this lapse in critical thinking among people who are captivated by a politician because they got a letter. I think it a failure in education to teach people how to reason and think critically, and how to construct and evaluate arguments -- these and other skills needed to participate meaningfully in government. For some, these skills come naturally, but others need to be taught. (I don't mean to imply this is the case with your friend.)
I wonder if your friend knows that Maine state Senators and House Reps. send out hundreds of thousands of letters yearly. I have received numerous letters, most of little substance, and business leaders I know have received more personal ones. Yet never do these recipients delude themselves into thinking these letters are anything more than political, part of the continual campaigning politicians do to keep their positions.
On the other hand, your friend may be so impressed with what he perceives to be 'personal' attention, that he has no desire to critically evaluate Snowe's performance record.

>>Couple this with enviro wackos having the ear of gov.officials and the feel good social programs <<
I, too, am very distressed with the far-leftist politics in this state, especially in southern Maine.
I find that educating people helps, because most are oblivious to how our legislators directly contributed, by the policies they supported, to the destruction of Maine's business climate, the closing of factories, and the massive influx of poor, taxpayer-dependent, overpopulated refugee/immigrant families into our state.
I am glad for you that you can get out, and I wish you and your business a lot of success.

Wait a minute... I'm not leaving yet. Wrong poster. The other guy is leaving, and I don't blame him.
Maine is a large state and a poor state. Alot of people just
don't realize how much it costs to maintain the infrastructure and then provide for all these social programs that are now essential.

Glad to hear the boat business is back. I was mostly referring to luxury boats. How's that industry up there?

When will Snowe and maybe Chaffee switch to Independent and give control back to the Dems? Do we get what we can in tax breaks now and go for more later on, or do we risk everything and start blaming each other?

That's what I was talking about. I'm a paint foreman at Brooklin Boatyard. We build fine quality pleasure yachts.
I was at Hinckly Yachts when Georgie Mitchells tax the wealthy plan went thru. It was very bad for the industry. They don't have to buy their stinkin' yachts over here. Thank god that that stupid tax was finally repealed. I don't know how the working boat business is going, but after so many great years of lobster catches, I would think that that business is going well.
