got gay British playwright Joe Orton a jail sentence back in the 60s.(actually he defaced, and glued in, rather than
harmlessly inserted---still though, I think it's a capital idea.

The way I would do it would be to pick up a copy browse it and wander off to another section of the bookstore where you can casually insert the correct cover. Then return it to the stack.
