I'm Presbyterian. Are there any Catholic School Kids that went to school in the 50's and 60's or before ritalin? How did the nuns handle kids like this?

I went to a Catholic school in the sixties and seventies. The nuns beat the kids in my class, plain and simple. One nun smacked a boy's knuckles with the beveled edge of a metal ruler. The last I saw of this kid, he never regained the use of his pinkie finger. Sorry, that is just plain wrong.

They beat the crap out of them and suggested the parents send them to the public schools.

I went to Sister school in the 1st and 2nd ('58-'59) grades and the 11th and 12th grades ('69-'70). I've got the scarred knuckles to prove it.

I feel like I still came out better than the zoners on Ritylin.

Catholic nuns wearing big habbits scared the heck out of me back in the late 60s... I didn't dare act out of line.

Many kids these days need to experience the power of a good habbit.

Being the product of a Catholic School in the '60's I can answer this. The nuns were without mercy. Lots of yardsticks across the knuckles. Lots of yanked ears. Lots of public humiliations in front of the class.

My brother and I long ago discussed this very thing. We went through the list of the problem kids when we were in grade school. To the person, every one of them ended up in prison, and two are still there to this day.

A lot of these are the ones who dropped out of school, got kicked out of school, or ended up in prison because they turned to drugs, alcohol, or violence. Had there been treatment for this very real ADHD, these very smart kids wouldn’t have ended up as adults with a very low self esteem.
