In other words, the French want to surrender and leave, and stick the US with the conflict. Washington realizes this and is extracting some very needed payback from the French hide. My heart friggin bleeds.

I don't see it quite that way. More likely, France has reached some dirty little under-the-table deal with Kofi Annan and the Muslim rebels in Ivory Coast that guarantees a steady supply of cocoa (Ivory Coast is the world's largest producer of cocoa) coming into France at a very nice price, with the whole thing brokered through the UN, which lets Kofi and his thugs have a chance to dip their beaks as well. Think of a racket similar to the "oil for food" program.

This will ensure that the UN will sit on it's hands while the Ivory Coast Christians and Jews are butchered, the culture implodes and the burqas make their appearance. France gets to rake in the bucks, bring its troops home, and of couse will stand ready to block any move by us to relieve the slaughter in their former colony. And naturally the media will coo endlessly about how wonderful West Africa is now that yet another vestige of "colonialism" has been ended.

I have been half-way following this conflict.
The French are trying to set up another Islamic base, over the bodies of a lot of dead Christian people, who happen to be black, and happen to have vast quantities of a commodity the French, and Belgium, wish to controll.
If I were proficient at retrieveing threads, I would post one now showing a group of Christian Ivory Coaster's begging the USA to intervene militarily against the French.
Will we, and the rest of the world, stand back and watch another African genocidal massacre orchestrated by the French?

This is what makes it hard..but we would have to go to war with the UN..and I mean literally. The French are going to get away with it.We can keep from rewarding them..little else.I am a cynic. We are incapable of righting all wrongs.

"Yikes. That really sucked all the life and the joy out of my exhortation."

Kinda like the sucking sound of that durn NAFTA accord, rofl.

And we should all drink more Australian wine and have lots of lots of sex.

Sounds great to me but how does the last part hurt the French?

It doesn't. It just makes us feel good. Living well is the best revenge and all that. Besides, why does everything have to be about the French?
