[history]
Assembly Republicans, whose support will be crucial to a state budget deal, offered a plan Tuesday that they say would avoid taxes and pay off the state's debt over five years.
Democrats for more than a year have accused Assembly Republicans of failing to compromise or come up with a detailed plan of their own for addressing a shortfall estimated as high as $34.6 billion through June 2004.

Talk about "fuzzy math," LOL. Gray Davis and the Democrats are completely out of touch with reality. Republicans propose real cuts and a series of one time debt layovers to gradually pay off the debt. All without raising taxes. The Democrats insist it isn't realistic. We know whose approach has bankrupted this state. When the governor and the majority party are serious about getting California out of its fiscal hole instead of playing political games, Republicans will be ready to listen.

I just caught about 15 minutes of Tom McClintock on the KSFO morning show. He says "The change will need to come from outside of Sacramento first before the legislature gets its manure together." or words to that effect ;-)
The demRats want to keep spending other people's money, they have no other agenda besides socialism at any cost.

("We are already at the limit of the market's capacity to lend us money," Peace said.)
California sounds like a teenager who maxed out his/her credit by spending irresponsibly.
(Peace said a one-year spending freeze wouldn't work because the state has a legal obligation to pay for growth in caseloads and school enrollment. Some of the GOP's proposed cuts would likely end up costing the state even more money, he said. And laying off state workers to cut the bureaucracy by 10 percent would not garner savings until the following fiscal year, Peace said.)
That makes a lot of sense. If a cut only affects the following fiscal year, it shouldn't be done (argument to be recycled next fiscal year, etc..) Also, there is a LEGAL obligation to keep increasing spending!!! That's good! Fiscal responsibility is now illegal!
These kinds of statements should be publicized nationawide in future elections. They give a great view of Democrats' tax and spend habit.

Just put everything on credit and enjoy the good life. Someone can figure out how to repay the tab a century from now.
