I'm afraid that there are a lot of voters here in California who think that state bond issues are free money.
Suburban voters of Santa Clara, the San Mateo, Contra Costa, and Marin Counties support environmental bills without question. They pay plenty of taxes and know damned well what they want for them: free use of other people's land for recreational value. They'll use any means of aquision, whether by regulation, easement, or eminent domain. The growing scarcity of land for housing then pushes up their property value, but hey, they're safe under Proposition 13. At the marginal price of their taxes these bonds are, quite literally, a steal. It's equivalent to demographic theft.
Such counties are where many of the most extreme among our cogressional delegation arises. Now you know one more reason why. Ain't socialsim wonderful?
