Castro Poised, Once Again, To Unleash Exodus to U.S.

Castro Poised, Once Again, To Unleash Exodus to U.S. Special Treatment of Cubans Under U.S. Immigration Laws Must Be Changed (Washington, D.C. April 25)

“With growing concern about a possible new wave of illegal immigration unleashed by Fidel Castro and the possibility of a related mass migration from Haiti, the Bush Administration needs to do more than brush off contingency plans and hold illegal entrants from Haiti indefinitely,” notes Dan Stein, executive director of the Federation for American Immigration Reform. “It is imperative that the Administration act immediately and abolish the arbitrary and capricious 'wet-foot, dry-foot’ policy adopted by the Clinton Administration that allows Cubans who step onto the U.S. shore to stay permanently. It is time to end the discriminatory policy that favors Cubans. Unless they qualify for asylum, they should be sent back to Cuba,” he added.

FAIR’s call comes amid an announcement from the Attorney General outlining national security concerns with future mass migrations and government agencies scurrying to update boatlift contingency plans. The repeal of the “wet-foot, dry-foot” policy, which has been in place since 1994, would place Cubans on equal footing with immigrants from every other nation who, upon landing in the U.S., must prove that they are being singled out for persecution before they’re granted asylum here. The “wet-foot, dry-foot” policy allows Cubans who make it to the U.S. to remain. Those who are interdicted offshore are returned to Cuba unless they make a strong case that they would be persecuted.

The purpose in putting an end to the preferential treatment for Cubans is to discourage those who are simply seeking better economic opportunity from ever setting out for the United States in the first place. Such a policy could also have a beneficial effect in deterring illegal immigration from elsewhere in the Caribbean. FAIR has also called on Congress to repeal the Cuban Adjustment Act, which gives permanent residence to Cuban illegal aliens a year after they enter.

The prospect of another massive flotilla of migrants poses serious national security risks, given the current global terrorist threat. “An immigration free-for-all, with thousands of people washing up on our shores and turned loose on the streets of this country, would expose this country to enormous dangers,” warned Stein. “Castro has sent us criminals and gangsters in the past. There is certainly reason to be concerned about who might be among the untold thousands of people who might be headed here the next time it’s in Castro’s interest to open the floodgates.”

“While we all agree that Castro’s dictatorship is deplorable, and his repression must end, it’s in the interest of national security and fair treatment for all under our immigration laws that we call for revoking the special treatment for Cubans and restoring order to our immigration process.”

Why not? Everybody else is. This nation is becoming a dead animal with vultures everywhere preparing to come and feed off it.

The problems with Castro should have been taken care of long time ago. Any country that unleashes its citizens on another in this fashion is committing an act that justifies retaliation.

Why don't we deport all our violent criminals to Cuba? You now, the old "don't get mad, get even" philosophy...

No, just the opposite. If he throws off his citizens into this country, some of them violent, then we should respond in kind, with military force if necessary. Should have done it long time ago.

the Bush Administration needs to do more than brush off contingency plans and hold illegal entrants from Haiti indefinitely,

Why the double standard? What is so different between Haitian illegals and Mexican illegals that Bush would deport only the Haitians? They only come for a better life ---the same as Mexicans. How is it right to give amnesty to millions of Mexicans but deport Haitians and try to block Castro from sending all his Cubans? Mexican criminals are all over the US and are very successful in bringing in all kinds of drugs so we know it's not out of fear of criminals.

I can see it now:

The Democrat candidates as coxswains bringing Cubans to the US in Freedom Dories, Liberty Dinghys, Peace Skiffs, Happiness Canoes, Prosperity Scows, Love Barges, I-Feel-Your-Pain Rafts, Make-Love-Not-War Umiaks, Can't-We-All-Get-Along Shallops, Progressive Bateaus.....

Your right we should not have a double standard. We need a strict policy that applies to all immigrants. Amnesty for all Mexicans is a bad idea we should all be outraged and let our government know how we feel about it.
But I fear most of our politicians just want new voters and our country will pay for it

Gather them in Guantanamo, arm the young men with rifles and send them into the mountains. They have all done military service, they will know what to do.

You hate immigrants because they are not european. When chinese or indian immigrants come, people complain "they work too hard and for less money than americans and that drives wages down". When cubans come, people complain " they don't work enough and go on welfare". Bottom line is, if you are not a european immigrant, people complain.

Cuban americans tend to vote about 70% republican. They have lived under communism and they don't like it. That is why they vote republican.
