One definition of politics is the art of the possible. Do you want a public stand or do you want the Assault Weapons Ban to just go away. I want the latter and I see this strategy as letting it go away and stay away. You are assuming a lot, or you have inside information?

I am making no real assumptions just recognizing that as of now there has been no direct statement from George W. Bush on this issue and this issue has a whole lot of history that will make it difficult to pass. Congress critters remember 1994 and what this issue did then. They know that if the assaukt weapons ban is extended between now and the election it will only help the Democrat party. They know that even safe congressional seats can be doomed by a vote to extend this ban.
I am also clearly stating that Congress critters should be innundated with letters from RKBA people. Yes, sending letters to the White House is also a good idea. The whole point is GWB made some statements in the 2000 campaign that he would support the AWB so now it incumbent to let it die a natural death. As I stated without Congressional action to extend the AWB it will expire on September 14, 2004. Everyone with a calendar can see that date is less than 60 days prior to the election. It is clearly in the interest of GWB to have the AWB expire then even though he supported the extension.
