So, what exactly is the difference between the Queen asking for more unemployment benefits, and King George Bush II asking for an extension...which, I believe, he did just a few short months ago.

Under normal conditions, unemployment benefits run for a total of six months. If you can`t find a job in six months, they baby you ain`t looking. Jan. 9th 2003, Congress extended those 6 months to an extra 13 weeks= 9 months. If you can`t find a job in 9 months, then baby you damn well sure ain`t looking. Now Hitlery wants to extend it for a full year. If you can`t find a job in one full year, then baby welcome to socialism.

Nothing at all. It's pandering to the weak & needy (all for votes, of course) and it sucks.

She wants to take credit for something that will happen anyway.

What will happen anyway?

The extension of jobless benefits.

It did not happen and it will not. It did during the previous recession but now the rules are different.

Me: She [Hillary] wants to take credit for something that will happen anyway.

You: What will happen anyway?

Me: The extension of jobless benefits.

You: It did not happen and it will not. It did during the previous recession but now the rules are different.

Today: House GOP Leaders Agree to Unemployment Extension Benefits.

Funny how this works. The minute the un-employment checks stop coming, people miraculously find work, albeit maybe not the exact work they would like, but just the same they find work, because they have to work, to eat. This is exactly what happened to me in the 1980's (before my moral epiphany and subsequent move to conservatism), it happened to my brother, and a few friends. And it's always the same story..

What? No more checks ? Time to work now. Take away the free money, and just about everyone finds some kind of job.

It's amazing that those in Congress, who will never need to rely on extended jobless benefits, do not understand that it just enables those without jobs to stay out of work, longer... thus not generating more income, which the government can TAX!

Very funny indeed. If you are right than the loss of American jobs is a result of unemployment benefits and food stamps.

Could you explain me o wise one, what was the cause of unemployment in 1930's in America, Germany and elsewhere? Was it an epidemics of laziness, or maybe the fault of statisticians who did not count selling apples on the streets as jobs?

Sir/madam, cool your jets.

I am just a normal guy who did what he had to do to make it through 4 or 5 periods of un-employment in my life. Thing is, I think my story is fairly common. I know at least 4 other people, including 3 friends, with the same story.

Does it make just to much sense for you? When you run out of money, you move, you learn to type or figure out another way to re-train yourself, drop some expenditures or work at Burger King at night and drive a Taxi during the day (both of which I have done to be able to eat and feed my kids) People make it work, they kick ass, and quit whining.

By the way, aren't un-employment benefits a fairly new program ? Possibly from the 60's or 70's ? How did our parents survive without un-employment benefits?

Finally, I am not completly against un-employment benifits. I am just against continually extending and extending them. I think 3 months-6 months max, should be enough for folks to figure out how climb out of a hole.

"Sir" of course. Can't you tell it by the way of writting? :)

I am just a normal guy who did what he had to do to make it through 4 or 5 periods of un-employment in my life. Thing is, I think my story is fairly common. I know at least 4 other people, including 3 friends, with the same story.

But you know also about the Great Depression, even if you did not experience it yourself.

It makes a lot of sense when the recession is moderate. But when the economy is severely contracting numerous people will be destitute even with your approach.

By the way, aren't un-employment benefits a fairly new program ? Possibly from the 60's or 70's ? How did our parents survive without un-employment benefits?

Some did, some did not. In such a way you can treat any disaster - earthquake, war with foreign occupation, plague. Some do survive it some don't. But intelligent policies can reduce the misery.

Finally, I am not completly against un-employment benifits. I am just against continually extending and extending them. I think 3 months-6 months max, should be enough for folks to figure out how climb out of a hole.

I think that it should depend on the condition of economy. When the jobs are plentiful - benefits should be short, when jobs are scarce the benefits should be extended. When the jobs are as hard to get as in 1930s Germany or America, public works should be created by the state to preserve the society from disaster.

If the leadership is facilitating the global competition and job exports, it is also responsible for providing sufficient buffering (extended benefits, job retraining etc ...)
