In 1981, a police psychologist wrote that he was unfit for police work. In 1989, he was investigated for date rape. And on the day before the shooting, after reports that he had been threatening his wife, city personnel officials urged that his gun be confiscated.

There is a lot of new detail in this article. Worth a read if you've been following this story.
It's a Slimes/Compost byline so I just posted a teensy part here. The Source URL is the Eugene paper which won't make you sign in or accept a cookie, and there's only one pop-up to annoy non-Mozilla browsers.

A Sarah Brady only cops should have guns bump. And the major media won't print the complete story. I have a copy of the LOS ANGELES TIMES article about this shooting from page A44, Sunday, 04 May, 2003. The article makes no mention of the behavioral history of the police chief. It's an AP story, to be sure, but the fix is already in.
The press can be expected to report this story in a context that leaves out the pertinent facts, to be replaced with a context in accord with the papers anti-gun agenda.

Here are a couple more snips:
...
In each case, the Tacoma police force and the city's top leadership appeared to have closed ranks to protect, promote and insulate Brame from criticism.
...
News of the bitter divorce first appeared in an Internet publication in the week before the shooting. In the immediate aftermath of Brame's suicide, the president of the Tacoma police union threatened Web site editor John Hathaway.
``If you want to throw stones, you had better live in a bulletproof glass house,'' union President Patrick Frantz told Hathaway in an e-mail.
...
I read this article at lunchtime and posted from home tonight. This first paprgraph above doesn't surprise me a bit, we see that almost anywhere, but the second one about that union president ticks me off a bit. There might be people in that city government that need fired, but this guy needs to go to jail, IMHO (in any event, oughtn't be trusted with gunz).
