PM to review missile shield program

OTTAWA -- After years of arguing that he doesn't need to take a stand on a missile shield because the technology doesn't exist, Prime Minister Jean Chretien now says he's willing to take another look at it.

"There has been an evolution in this file over the last six months," Chretien told the Commons yesterday, adding there's a debate in his cabinet and caucus on the issue. The PM said he has been pleased to see that U.S. President George W. Bush's version of the so-called "Star Wars" missile shield is more palatable than that of former U.S. president Ronald Reagan.

"It is not the same anymore. It is much more limited," he said.

"We are looking at what position Canada should take within NORAD and other organizations because they are our neighbours," Chretien said.

His new receptiveness comes only a week after he told the Commons that he's not considering supporting the program because Bush hasn't asked.

LOL @ the technology doesn't exist. How far back in time is this man. Maybe he should pay us a visit and see that we have cars, and jet planes and computers.
