Atari rises again

Infogrames changes its name

By Staff at the Newsdesk: Wednesday 07 May 2003, 12:42

THE NAME ATARI has a chequered history to say the least. The original firm was created by Nolan Bushnell and is normally credited as bringing video gaming to the masses in the form of Pong. The company suffered many ups and downs, with the brand name eventually being bought by Infogrames. Now Infogrames has decided to change its name to Atari.

It's an interesting move, possibly one worthy of the cry of "atari!" in go that the firm was originally named after. Infogrames is a French firm that over the years has found itself shifting more and more to the US. And, let's face it, the name Atari is as American as an apple pie cliche.

Infogrames was founded by Bruno Bonnell and Christophe Sapet. The company's first title was Le Cube Informatique, an educational program that helped teach Basic.

Now there's just Atari, Infogrames is no more. The company has announced that it will have the Nasdaq ticker of ATAR. µ

didn't info games do zork (an old dos text game)? I didn't know infogames still existed. I thought they had died out with Win 3.1.

Don't I remember Infogames being tied into some connection with terrorists and fund raising?
