(CNSNews.com) - Two Democratic Members of Congress have criticized President George W. Bush for using the USS Abraham Lincoln as a platform to announce that the United States and its allies have prevailed over Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. On the Senate floor Tuesday, Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) questioned "the motives of a desk-bound president who assumes the garb of a warrior for the purposes of a speech."~~ He was referring to the fact that Bush wore a flight suit as he arrived on the ship. "As I watched the president's fighter jet swoop down onto the deck of the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, I could not help but contrast the reported simple dignity of President Lincoln at Gettysburg with the flamboyant showmanship of President Bush aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln," Byrd stated. "American blood has been shed on foreign soil in defense of the president's policies," said Byrd, who had opposed sending military forces into Iraq. "This is not some made-for-TV backdrop for a campaign commercial." Also on Tuesday, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) sent a letter to the General Accounting Office -- the investigative arm of Congress -- asking for "a full accounting of the costs associated with the president's trip" since the event "had clear political overtones."

Do I smell envy? I think the Dems are just upset because the majority of the Armed Services support Republicans. Maybe that's why Gore didn't want their vote to count in 2000.

Someone track down the articles complaining about Clinton using the USS Theodore Roosevelt for the location of one of his speechs in 1993.

I assume the Dems were upset when Dukakis took a picture in the tank?

These Navy people had just finished the longest deployment in Naval History. They had a flawless performance record. THEY deserved to have the PRESIDENT PERSONALLY thank them.
Due to the on going terrorist threat we can't have parade's, so this is a good way to give them the recognition they deserve.

I almost cracked up when the DU bunch claimed they had to disarm the troops for Bush's carrier visit because they were worried about his safety, and said they didn't have to worry when Clinton visited the troops. Hah! If anyone had to worry about military resentment it was the Toon.

Do they remember the twice a year vacation trips for Chelsea? Oh, sure Willie would go, as to China, for example, where he probably dropped of secret military technology and picked up unmarked cash, but, it was a scholl break for Chelsea that cost the taxpayers over $50 million.

These pictures give me goosebumps--of pride, of course. Whoever said a couple of days ago that this event looked more like a family reunion than a presidential speech and photo op was right.

I know. Of all people for him to reference.

Hey, numbnuts, you can't land a 747 on an aircraft carrier, and the pilots of these aircraft wear flight suits for a reason.
The Dems are getting increasingly petty by the day.

I agree. The speech was the right one, at the right time, at the right place, by the right person.

I wonder, during the Roman republic how did the Senate handle its senile members?
