Please pardon my ignorance, but what is the link between humidity and skin cancer? I have never heard of this before.

Same problem here in AZ. Skin cancer is high because of low humidity. I believe AZ is #2 right behind Australia.
It has nothing to do with the humidity (or lack if it), it's the intensity of the sun's rays. Your chances of getting skin cancer is just as high during our rainy, monsoon season in the summer, just as it is in the drier parts of the year.

Here in NM the problem is altitude. Working at 7500ft means you are above most of the atmosphere. (I did have a cancer removed from the nose. It was the least problematic one but I don't remember which.)
Sunscreen is a good idea.
