George Waggoner's fifth-grade daughter, Jessica, would have attended Hollis Academy this year if a federal law hadn't allowed her to transfer and provided transportation to her new school. Waggoner was one of 147 students in Greenville County to switch schools under the No Child Left Behind provision that requires school districts to allow students to transfer from schools labeled "needing improvement."

""Principals at the four schools are working to improve test scores and the reputations of their schools.

Rod Taylor, principal at Lakeview, said he's sent out brochures to potential students and the guidance office "actively recruits" fifth-graders at its feeder elementary schools.

"In Greenville County, word of mouth is everything," he said.

Taylor said the school is working to improve by offering instruction in the four core subjects — math, English, social studies and science — every day. They teach algebra, and geometry will be offered for the first time next year. ""

Imagine that! Schools being forced to take responsibility for improving the education of their students. Thank you President Bush for the "No Child Left Behind" Act!

"School choice has worked for them, parents say"

Yeah, people tend to do better when making their own choices, a concept that is lost on the Left. OTOH, the Waggoners seem to think that transport of their kid to school is something owed to them by the government. Not the sign of people used to making their own choices.

Under the law, schools are given "needs improvement" status if their test scores don't improve enough and they receive money from the federal Title 1 program, which pours extra money into schools with high poverty levels to try to boost student achievement.

Welfare schools don't work. End all government supported schools. That is real choice.
