From U.S. Naval Forces Central Command/U.S. 5th Fleet Public Affairs

ARABIAN GULF, Aboard USS Saipan (NNS) -- An explosion occurred May 7 in a berthing compartment aboard USS Saipan (LHA 2) injuring 11 personnel.

One of the injured has been evacuated to an Army field hospital in Kuwait with a serious arm wound and is in stable condition. The remaining injured are being treated by the ship’s medical personnel. None of the injuries are life-threatening.

The injured personnel were members of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, based at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and have been deployed to the Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The explosion occurred in a trash receptacle in Marine berthing, piercing a bulkhead and injuring personnel in the adjacent compartment. The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation.

...trash container explosion?

Really - do you suppose we have another case of "The Religion of Peace" being practiced by a military member?

Please tell me we didn't outsource trash pickup on naval ships to locals. Get ready to investigate the Muslims on board.

I has been my life experience that trash receptacles don't explode on their own - they require some assistance.

That is exactly what I'm thinking!!! I have over 20 years in the Navy and have seen and heard of some bizarre accidents (warships are dangerous places)but I'm having a hard time imagining what could have "accidently" been placed in a trash container to cause an explosion of that magnitude!!!
