FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Black leaders are demanding the removal of Confederate President Jefferson Davis' statue from the Kentucky Capitol, questioning its place in a state that was officially neutral in the Civil War.
"It's offensive," said Raoul Cunningham, a former state NAACP official. "Even in the days when he was alive, this state did not follow him. So why do we honor him today?"
Davis' statue, one of five honoring famous Kentuckians, has stood in the Capitol Rotunda since its 1936 unveiling. It was built through donations from the United Daughters of the Confederacy and a $5,000 appropriation from the Legislature.
Davis stands against a wall, behind the right shoulder of a statue of fellow Kentuckian Abraham Lincoln.
Kentucky remained in the Union and officially stayed neutral throughout the war, although a significant part of the population sympathized with and fought for the Confederacy.
Former state Sen. Georgia Powers said having a Davis statue in the Capitol is tantamount to flying a Confederate flag above the statehouse.
The state, however, may not be able to remove the statue because the Capitol is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, said Tom Fugate, military sites preservation coordinator for the state's Heritage Council.
"When you remove it from its original position -- from its place of honor -- you lose its integrity," Fugate said.
The state chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and other groups are pushing for the statue's removal.

"It's offensive," said Raoul Cunningham, a former state NAACP official. So is the private sector having to work on Martin Luther King Day in order to pay the taxes so that the public employees can have the day off.
Let's put an end to that practice too.

I've been expecting them (civil rights leaders) to demand that Stone Mountain be leveled.

Perhaps if Rebeleye had used the actual correct title:
"Black leaders want Jefferson Davis statue removed from Kentucky Capitol"
he might have found it, rather than editing it to suit his tastes.

Thanks to these guys, and so-called liberals, a whole generation of people think they have the "right not to be offended". Hell, I find M.L. King offensive when you get right down to it. He plagiarized all his stuff, was a womanizer, and consorted with known communists, but they named a road after him around here. That oughtta go to, dontcha think?

You know ... I see a lot of "This has been posted before" posts on a lot of threads ... funny thing is .... most of the "posted before threads" .... I have never seen and I spend a GREAT DEAL of time on FR. Personally I'm happy that they are posted again so that I can see them too. So ... why don't we give the "posted before" posts a rest ... unless it is a post that's been posted numerous times before RECENTLY
Thanks

...M.L. King... they named a road after him around here. You'd be mighty hard pressed to find any city or town with blacks in it that doesn't have a road or school named after him. Even when it "offends" other races.
While they're at it by tearing down Davis' statue, why don't they also tear down the statue and mansion of Sir William Johnson, way up in Johnstown NY, and change the name of the town while they're at it? His entire family were notorious tories who fought against the American Revolution. Their depredations with the Indian raiders resulted in many appalling deaths on the New York and Pennsylvania frontiers.

BTW I said this cause I feel that saying "this has been posted before" discourages people from posting for fear of being called on it and I personally don't think that people should be discouraged from posting. Granted ... a search should be performed BUT a lot of times the search is unfruitful
