UN's Relevance May Be at Stake in Postwar Dispute With the U.S.

United Nations, May 9 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. argued with France, Russia and other members of the United Nations over starting the Iraq war. The conflict has ended; the U.S. debate with the UN hasn't.

The UN wants a major say in the rebuilding of Iraq. The U.S. view, expressed by Vice President Dick Cheney last month, is that the UN isn't ``equipped'' for a central part. The U.S. has drafted a Security Council resolution that says the UN should play a ``vital'' postwar role yet specifies only a ``coordinating'' position for the agency.

I think the article is trying and I think mostly succeeding in setting out the situation in an objective manner, more or less. (with a few jabs at the US, but otherwise pretty good article, recognizes that the UN may well become irrelevant.)

We won the "Battle of Afghanistan", the "Battle of Iraq", I hope we win the "Battle of the UN".

Simply advise the U.N. that "Their present resources are already strained and overburdened by their failure to rebuild Bosnia and Kosovo and until they have finished work in those two nations, further involvement would be counter-productive."
