Taipei, May 9 (Bloomberg) -- Taiwan reported 18 more cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome, its biggest one-day increase, bringing the total on the island to 149 and surpassing Canada as the area fourth-most-affected by the disease.

The island's Center for Disease Control has preliminary findings that indicate some SARS patients may have caught the disease while on public transport, the Department of Health said in a statement. There was also a cluster in a housing complex.

I suspect that many of tommorrow's subway riders will be ignoring Heymann's advice to put down their masks.

This is not good news for Taiwan. Not good at all. This could be part of the results of the taxi driver with sars driving around ill for a week or so before dying.

may have caught the disease while on public transport,

A minister from the Highway Department died Monday from SARS the Tapei Times reported. The Tuesday before, he went to the hospital but was released because he hadn't (they thought) been in contract with anyone with SARS and his symptoms were not acute. He was back in the hospital Friday. The Times said it is suspected he contracted the virus while on a series of business trips on the island in late April.

I believe that's the guy they've fingered as a "super-spreader" who's responsible for a good deal of the SARS in Taiwan.
