The four wire is the wire closest to the stern (round end) of the ship. The one wire is the one furthest forward. Aviators aim for the three wire.
If the pilot flying that Viking missed and caught any other wire, he is probably going to be thrown in the brig for time and all eternity.

The Lincoln was only about 40 miles off the coast. It was well within range of the VH-3. He flew off the carrier the following morning in Marine One. The Lincoln was originally scheduled to dock at North Island on May 4th but the arrival was moved up to the 2nd because they made good time sailing across the Pacific.

The four wire is the wire closest to the stern Okay, do they take off and land toward the aft end?

Darn, Sean dumped me before I could tell him that the ship was not delayed. At lease we got it out that the flight was budgeted and paid for. If the President didn't fly on the Viking, it would have made another flight anyway.

With the recent day retelling of the delayed arrival fairy tale I thought this thread deserved a BUMP.
