I was lucky enough to be in OKC Friday night! A friend and I were spending the night at a motel near the intersection of I-40 and I-35, when things began to break loose. About 9:45 p.m., the front desk called our room and said there was a tornado warning, one was on the ground and heading northeast (our general direction), and we should huddle in the bathroom. Yikes! The tornado gradually veered off to the north about 1 1/2 miles from us, then back toward 35 and on up north and east, so we were spared. The weather people are amazing in OKC. There was a helicopter in the air, and three or four guys at different locations on the ground; everyone was calmly predicting where the thing was headed and approximate arrival time. Their continual vigilance probably saved several lives. What a wild Friday night!

I hate this stuff on two levels:

1. Why should people in NY pay for disasters in OK? Why doesn't everyone just pay for their own disasters?

2. Why is it that if your house gets destroyed and you don't have insurance, you are screwed, but if it just so happens that 50 of your neighbors houses get destroyed as well then you get money from the taxpayers?

Is this any different than flood or snow relief
in other parts of the country?

No it's not. I wasn't meaning to single out Oklahoma. But I still don't see the logic behind any of it.

The logic is that a lot of people in this country are compassionate and care enough to want to help otheres who have been hurt. But they can't take the time out of their lives... or can't figure out how to help.... so the government doing it for them makes sense.

I'd rather our government helped american citizens than sending money to 3rd world countries who basically hate us. But that's just me. I realize that some would rather we didn't do either of them :)
