[history]
Oreo cookies should be banned from sale to children in California, according to a lawsuit filed by a San Francisco attorney who claims that trans fat -- the stuff that makes the chocolate cookies crisp and their filling creamy -- is so dangerous children shouldn't eat it.

More of Californias total disconnect with normal people of the world.
People like this lawyer will never stop until total control over what you say, do, eat, do for work, how you work, how you act, what you say, and how you say it is established under them and their laws which they dont have to obey but you do.

I suspect it's not really about the fat. It wouldn't surprise me if part of this is a blow against our racist society in which African-Americans are being subtly encouraged to act like their White oppressors.
Hey, it's California.

Some lawyers got too much time on their hands.
Almost everything we eat has fat in it, makes it taste good. Parents know that, and it's up to them to decide what their kids munch on, not money grubbing parasites.

They can pry my Oreos out of my cold, dead hand!

How "Marin County." It never stops.

Good post. I just checked out the BanTransFats.com site cited by the article and am disappointed that Dr. Mary Enig is involved with their effort. The hysterical (as in hysteria rather than humor) tone of the website only serves to devalue the research that Enig and others have done in nutrition and lipid biochemistry. That trans fats are unhealthy is well established in the research and I would prefer the discussion of their use in our foods be carried out in a more dignified manner than T-shirts and lawsuits.

Time to put the LARD and beef fat back in the cookies!
To: ricpic
Yeah, as long as the taxpayers don't end up paying the medical bills for those transfatty aficionados because the insurance companies excluded their lifestyle choices from medical coverage, I say, "Let them eat Oreos!"
To: kaktuskid
Interestingly, Enig argues for that very thing. She wrote a fascinating book "Know Your Fats" that is essentially lipid biochemistry for beginners. It's a little rough around the edges as she refused to use a professional writer. Important details get lost in the translation, she says. She takes a very contrarian approach to fats in general. Enig has some good things to say about villianous saturated fats like lard and criticism for the 'good' fats like canola oil. She provides info on just about every fat there is. Fascinating read and a good resource.
Since frivolous lawsuits will never go away, let's hope that the good that comes out of this is not banning another substance but truth in labeling. Give me, an informed consumer, an accurate list of ingredients and let me decide for myself.

In other news, volunteers for the Kaliforna Association of Public Safety raided residents' homes to discard any Oreos, Twinkies, Ding Dongs, Krispy Kreme donuts, frozen pizzas, Milk Duds, Whoppers, Snickers, and other fatty snacks. The residents were then carted away to the Bastille for issuing fatty foods to minors.

trans fats are pretty nasty. I would even say it's like a slow poison. But why pick on oreos? it's in every popular brand of peanut butter as well as almost every processed food. Get all the companies to change the fat

actually lard and beef fat (which the industry removed from most products because of concerns about too much saturated fat) is a bit better than partially hydrogenated oil

slippery slope bump.....we knew this was coming
To: Lil'freeper
there should certainly be a label on all products listing that it has trans fat and how much. A lot of people would choose alternatives if they only knew what was in the products. Even products that are supposedly good for you like peanut butter, fiber rich cereal and veggie burgers have it which can be the vegetarian's curse (substituting the bad saturated fat with the really bad trans). But the food processors are against the labeling

Gotta love the fat police. First, they will take away cookies. Then they will take away cereal. Then cake. Then all pastries. After they get rid of pastries, they will take away high fatty meat. The goes on and on and on...until they will take away everything reasonably bad for you. Soon, the only thing left would be asparagus to eat, until it is determined that it hurts a "living" being and we can't eat that either. :-/
