CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Accused of having an affair with a state employee, Gov. Bob Wise acknowledged Monday that he "was not faithful" to his family and asked for forgiveness.

Wise, who has a wife and two children, issued a statement in response to inquiries from the Charleston Daily Mail, which on Monday reported that a man was accusing the governor of having had an affair with his estranged wife.

"Several weeks ago, I had to do the toughest thing I have ever done - tell my family I had not lived up to their trust, expectation and love," the governor said in the statement. "I was not faithful to my family. I knew it was wrong, and now I must take full responsibility."

Wise, a Democrat elected in 2000, did not provide further details.

The governor's press secretary, Amy Shuler Goodwin, said the situation will not affect his re-election plans, and added Wise has no intention of resigning.

In his statement, Wise said: "I believe in accountability. I also hope one day for forgiveness, but I know that forgiveness must be earned."

Philip Frye, 40, of Hugheston told the Daily Mail that Wise had an affair with his wife, Angela Mascia-Frye. Frye, a musician, also said he hoped to sell the story because of financial strains.

Angela Mascia-Frye, 35, oversees European operations for the West Virginia Development Office. The Daily Mail reported that she had accompanied Wise on a trip to Spain last year.

"I really don't have anything to say and I don't know what you're writing about," she told The Associated Press.

State Republican Chairman Kris Warner said the GOP would not shy away from referring to Wise's problems in the 2004 gubernatorial campaign.

"Whether you've been unfaithful to your family or to the people of West Virginia, it will have dire consequences," Warner said.

Actually, Bennett apparently wrote his book "on his own time".....

But not while gambling, so it still counts as being separated from his sinful behavior. If he had written it in the casino while gambling, then it would be bad. Depends what the word "is" means! Besides, he made money from it so it was professional behavior to write the book.

Nevermind!!! My head hurts from trying to think like a demoncRAT. Right is right and wrong is wrong, I just can't justify it the other way around. Guess I will have to stay a republican.

* European investment supports nearly 25,000 jobs in West Virginia.
* EU companies are the top international investors in our state.
* The 15 EU nations bought roughly $900 million worth of exports from West Virginia businesses in 1995.
* Europe is our state's number one export market. source

I would challenge your generalization. West Virginia has a lot more than dirt farmers and coalminers.

According to the Almanac of American Politics, Wise won the 2000 gubernatorial election with critical support from the West Virginia teachers' unions, the United Mine Workers, and Robert Byrd.

He was shtupping someone else's wife. Now that's as low as you can get while having an affair. Bob Wise should make a clean admission he's embracing the "swinger scene" lifestyle. I'm sure the Democrats will appreciate his contribution to liberating the masses from conventional and outdated norms of sexual morality, which is so Victorian anyway. I tell you, its unfair he's the object of a non-event scandal! ;-)

WV has a long history of either corrupt or incompetent Governors. Wasn't it Caperton who lived in Maryland while Governor of WV?

I did not mean to disparage West Virginia or West Virginians by referring to "dirt farmers and coalminers". I was alluding to the idea that West Virginia is home to good, honest, hard-working people who do NOT deserve the government they are getting. While you seem to be impressed with EU investment in your fair state, you may want to take note that the federal and state governments employ 20 percent of your labor force; the EU "supports" around 3 percent. You're right that your not coalminers and dirtfarmers. One out of every five of you is a bureaucrat.

My point was that we good, honest, hard-working folk are doing a lot more than scratching out a living in the dirt or in the mines, that's all. We even have high-tech firms with college-edjamacated employees, gollleee! You are absolutely correct, however, in saying we have far too many gubmint employees (and gubmint welfare recipients, for that matter) per capita here.

"Parris Glenspending's similarly state-employed honey ended up marrying the governor. (She also took official trips with him before his prior marriage ended.)"

Yes, and you forgot to mention that she spawned Rosemary's Baby.

Of course, the liberal media in this state ignored it for the most part and went on to endorse Spendenning's heir, KKT. I'm so happy Bobby is telling the Sun to stick it where that rag doesn't shine by not giving interviews.

Gov. Bob Wise released a statement today saying he was "not faithful to my family" after his office was asked about allegations that he had been implicated in the divorce case of a woman who works in the state development office.

"Several weeks ago, I had to do the toughest thing I have ever done -- tell my family I had not lived up to their trust, expectation and love. I was not faithful to my family," Wise said in a release from his press office. "I knew it was wrong, and now I must take full responsibility.

"I apologize deeply to the people of our state for my actions. In my private life, I have let many people down."

Wise's press secretary was contacted after a Kanawha County man confirmed today that his divorce case in Kanawha County Family Court alleges his wife has been having a relationship with another man, whom he identified as Wise. Philip Frye, 40, declined to comment on specifics but said that his divorce case includes allegations that the man he identified as Wise and Frye's wife, Angela Mascia-Frye, had been having an affair for some time.

"I didn't come down with the last rain," Frye, a musician who lives in Hugheston in eastern Kanawha County, said. "I let this thing go on for months so I could get as much evidence as I possibly could.

"I had private detectives all over this thing. I've got pictures and documents -- all kinds of hard evidence."

Frye said he is going to withhold exact details of the allegations or a copy of his divorce filing for the time being, but said he placed much of the blame on Wise for failure of his almost seven-year marriage.

"That little weasel-faced bastard," Frye said. "Typical Democrat." Frye said he had had less success with his music career lately and the financial strain caused by the divorce was great. He said he was hoping to be able to sell his story because of Wise's involvement. Frye's lawyer, Joe Cometti, said no specific names are listed in his client's divorce filings. He said allegations of that nature are usually made anonymously in such filings.

"Other than that, there isn't anything I can say for now," Cometti said.

Mascia-Frye, 35, oversees European operations for the West Virginia Development Office. She accompanied Wise on a visit to Spain last year. Mascia-Frye had been in Italy and went to Spain to meet Wise in the city of Bilbao in the Basque region of the country. Mascia-Frye, who joined the office in March 2001 and is paid $43,920 a year, declined to comment on the allegations.

"I completely can't say anything at this time," Mascia-Frye said today from her office at the Capitol Complex.

When asked whether Wise was involved with Mascia-Frye, Press Secretary Amy Shuler Goodwin replied, "I don't talk about the governor's personal life."

When asked whether Wise would go before reporters or the public to make a statement, Goodwin would only refer to the written statement she had issued and say, "This is the governor's statement at this time."

Wise made no specific reference to an extra-marital affair in his statement but focused on the sensitive and familial nature of the situation. "I believe in accountability. I also hope one day for forgiveness, but I know that forgiveness must be earned," Wise said in the statement. "This is a very personal issue for my family and I ask for privacy during this time. I particularly ask that the privacy of my wife and children be respected."

Wise changed his plans for personal appearances today after his office was contacted about the allegations. He was scheduled to hand out Promise scholarships to seniors at Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley at noon, but Deputy Press Secretary Jodi Omear said she expected someone else to represent the governor at that ceremony. Wise also canceled a 3 p.m. appearance at the state's surplus property center in Dunbar, where he was scheduled to make a pre-auction announcement. Charleston Daily Mail

____________

Why does he say he wasn't faithful to his family? I think his wife is the aggrieved party here. Yes, the children are affected, but it's exceedingly rude of him to act like this isn't a violation of his vow to his wife. Governor Sleaze is scheduled to appear in my neck of the woods tomorrow to hand out Promise Scholarships and, thus far, there's no indication he'll cancel. It will be interesting to see what type of reception he'll receive.

I had no idea that infidelity was to your family. Silly me, I thought it was your SPOUSE that got cheated on.

Well, yes, of course. But if the kids are old enough to appreciate what's going on, it still has a devastating effect on them, so in a sense, it is his family that he cheated on.

Love your tagline, BTW.

I think he speaks of his 'family' because it outflanks any public criticism his wife might have of him.

I've asked for forgiveness, and we need to move beyond this dark period, but she continues to be a voice of public divisiveness.

In other words, it sounds to me like pre-divorce rhetoric.

It is too bad that all states don't still have the law on the books allowing the wronged party to sue the H*LL out of the interloper. One of the states out West still does, because I remember a case of a doctor being sued for big bucks.

Maybe the risk of losing their personal wealth would make some of these bums behave, and they could also ask themselves if the other party is trying to trap them.

I think persons in public office with all the money and power should be held to a HIGHER standard than Joe Average .
