Gov. Bob Wise released a statement today saying he was "not faithful to my family" after his office was asked about allegations that he had been implicated in the divorce case of a woman who works in the state development office.
"Several weeks ago, I had to do the toughest thing I have ever done -- tell my family I had not lived up to their trust, expectation and love. I was not faithful to my family," Wise said in a release from his press office. "I knew it was wrong, and now I must take full responsibility.
"I apologize deeply to the people of our state for my actions. In my private life, I have let many people down."
Wise's press secretary was contacted after a Kanawha County man confirmed today that his divorce case in Kanawha County Family Court alleges his wife has been having a relationship with another man, whom he identified as Wise.
Philip Frye, 40, declined to comment on specifics but said that his divorce case includes allegations that the man he identified as Wise and Frye's wife, Angela Mascia-Frye, had been having an affair for some time.
"I didn't come down with the last rain," Frye, a musician who lives in Hugheston in eastern Kanawha County, said. "I let this thing go on for months so I could get as much evidence as I possibly could.
"I had private detectives all over this thing. I've got pictures and documents -- all kinds of hard evidence."
Frye said he is going to withhold exact details of the allegations or a copy of his divorce filing for the time being, but said he placed much of the blame on Wise for failure of his almost seven-year marriage.
"That little weasel-faced bastard," Frye said. "Typical Democrat."
Frye said he had had less success with his music career lately and the financial strain caused by the divorce was great. He said he was hoping to be able to sell his story because of Wise's involvement.
Frye's lawyer, Joe Cometti, said no specific names are listed in his client's divorce filings. He said allegations of that nature are usually made anonymously in such filings.
"Other than that, there isn't anything I can say for now," Cometti said.
Mascia-Frye, 35, oversees European operations for the West Virginia Development Office. She accompanied Wise on a visit to Spain last year. Mascia-Frye had been in Italy and went to Spain to meet Wise in the city of Bilbao in the Basque region of the country.
Mascia-Frye, who joined the office in March 2001 and is paid $43,920 a year, declined to comment on the allegations.
"I completely can't say anything at this time," Mascia-Frye said today from her office at the Capitol Complex.
When asked whether Wise was involved with Mascia-Frye, Press Secretary Amy Shuler Goodwin replied, "I don't talk about the governor's personal life."
When asked whether Wise would go before reporters or the public to make a statement, Goodwin would only refer to the written statement she had issued and say, "This is the governor's statement at this time."
Wise made no specific reference to an extra-marital affair in his statement but focused on the sensitive and familial nature of the situation.
"I believe in accountability. I also hope one day for forgiveness, but I know that forgiveness must be earned," Wise said in the statement. "This is a very personal issue for my family and I ask for privacy during this time. I particularly ask that the privacy of my wife and children be respected."
Wise changed his plans for personal appearances today after his office was contacted about the allegations.
He was scheduled to hand out Promise scholarships to seniors at Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley at noon, but Deputy Press Secretary Jodi Omear said she expected someone else to represent the governor at that ceremony.
Wise also canceled a 3 p.m. appearance at the state's surplus property center in Dunbar, where he was scheduled to make a pre-auction announcement.

Good evening. [Clintons first lie.]
This afternoon in this room [Not in the oval office which is reserved for fun], from this chair [Wheres a good electrician when you need one?], I testified [Testified, Buthead, eh eh, eh eh, he said testified] before the Office of Independent Counsel and the grand jury.
I answered their questions truthfully [It was necessary to include this adverb], including questions about my private life, questions no American citizen would ever want to answer. [Please, can I answer them. Please, Please. I want to.]
Still, I must take complete [with certain reservations to be stated later] responsibility for all my actions, both public and private. And that is why I am speaking to you tonight.
As you know, in a deposition in January, I was asked questions about my relationship with Monica Lewinsky. While my answers were legally accurate [Its also true that the President is a technical virgin], I did not volunteer information. [He did not volunteer for military service either.]
Indeed, I did have a relationship with Miss Lewinsky that was not appropriate [Its inappropriate to where a hat indoors]. In fact, it was wrong. It constituted a critical lapse in judgment and a personal failure on my part for which I am solely and completely responsible [With certain reservations to be stated later].
But I told the grand jury today and I say to you now that at no time did I ask anyone to lie, to hide or destroy evidence or to take any other unlawful action. [Notice that Clinton did not specify threatening peoples career (Trip), threatening peoples families, slashing their tires, or kidnapping their cats (Willey).]
I know that my public comments and my silence about this matter gave a false impression. I misled [Pronounced myseld. Clinton does a lot of miseling; hes a great miseler.] people, including even my wife [I guess Hillarys really red in the face about that vast rightwing conspiracy crack now.] I deeply regret that.
I can only tell you I was motivated by many factors [Im a very complicated person]. First, by a desire to protect myself from the embarrassment of my own conduct. [Nota bene: The previous statement may be true.]
I was also very concerned about protecting my family [Picture Clinton as a mother tiger protecting her cubs]. The fact that these questions were being asked in a politically inspired lawsuit [Doesnt he remind you of Galilleo in front of the Inquisition?], which has since been dismissed, was a consideration, too. [Technical quibble: The lawsuit was dismissed after he perjured himself.]
In addition, I had real and serious concerns [I had serious concerns, therefore, I obstructed justice and threatened witnesses. If he had been deeply troubled would have robbed a gas station?] about an independent counsel investigation that began with private business dealings 20 years ago, dealings I might add about which [I dont like his sentence structure either.] an independent federal agency found no evidence [Serious question: Why is Clinton incapable of saying that hes actually innocent? He has no problem about other lies.] of any wrongdoing by me or my wife over two years ago.
The independent counsel investigation moved on to my staff and friends, then into my private life. And now the investigation itself is under investigation. [Apparently corruption is rampant in Washington. Lets cut off Ken Starrs head and beat Clinton to death with it.]
This has gone on too long [Its been seven months since he scolded us for even thinking he had an affair], cost too much [Ten million dollars since he declared war on those slanderers that said he had sex in the oval office.] and hurt too many innocent people. [Ken Starr, Kathleen Willey, Paula Jones, Betty Curry, etc., etc.]
Now, this matter is between me, the two people I love most [good straight line] -- my wife and our daughter [Come on, Bill, you can certainly be more creative than that.]-- and our God [Beelzebub? Kali?]. I must put it right, and I am prepared to do whatever it takes to do so [even a human sacrifice].
Nothing is more important to me personally. But it is private [Clintons private parts arent private; why should this be?], and I intend to reclaim my family life for my family.
It's nobody's business but ours. [However, your sexual habits, drug use, tobacco use, income, toilet tank capacity, etc., etc. are my business.]
Even presidents have private lives.[Some prisidents take more private lives than others.] It is time to stop the pursuit of personal destruction [except for my spin doctors] and the prying into private lives [except for my private detectives] and get on with our national life.
Our country has been distracted by this matter for too long, and I take my responsibility for my part [incidental as it is] in all of this. That is all I can do.
Now it is time -- in fact, it is past time to move on. [Please, Bill, move on and out]
We have important work [I think we could find Clinton a job at McDonald's] to do -- real opportunities to seize, real problems [e.g. why isn't oral sex legally sex?] to solve, real security matters [The oval office needs a new lock] to face.
And so tonight, I ask you to turn away from the spectacle [Eh eh, eh eh, spectacle, Beavis, he said spectacle.] of the past seven months, to repair the fabric [Eh eh, eh eh, Fabric, Beavis, he said Fabric. That one got by the Presidential double entendre excising machine.] of our national discourse [Get your mind off orality, Bill], and to return our attention to all the challenges [having sex with Hillary] and all the promise of the next American century.
Thank you for watching. And good night. [And God bless you, each and every one.]
Yeah, damning enough that he's squealing like a stuck hog. Jimmy Swaggart and his instantaneous but calculated tears do come to mind.
"I've been unfaithful to my family". Yea, verily. Generalize this as much as you can, guv.
No kidding. What is it with these guys? Did they all go to the same School Of Profesional Weaseling to get their degrees in Weaselcraft?
"I believe in accountability [If you did, you'd be resigning, fool]. I also hope one day for forgiveness, but I know that forgiveness must be earned," Wise said in the statement [Sorry, Governor Weasel, that's not how forgiveness works. No can never "earn" it. You are forgiven in spite of the fact that you don't deserve it. RESPECT is what has to be earned, but you don't have enough years left to do that.]"This is a very personal issue for my family and I ask for privacy during this time. I particularly ask that the privacy of my wife and children be respected." [It's a private matter, only about sex. Move on, folks, nothing to see. I'll just cower here, hiding behind my wife and kids like the weasel I am.]

Here's one he wrote just recently (click "newsroom" -> "governor's columns" -> "supporting loving families, Apr 17) --
SUPPORTING LOVING FAMILIES
by
Governor Bob Wise
Each year, West Virginia families open their homes and their hearts to orphaned children from faraway lands. They give these children the best gift possible: hope for the future and all the benefits of growing up in a loving home [like the ones you wreck, Bob?] and a wonderful nation.
International adoption has grown substantially in recent years, but the process by which these adoptions were recognized was out of date and posed several bureaucratic hurdles. Senate Bill 337, which I recently signed, simplifies this process by allowing adoptive parents to file a Petition for Recognition of Foreign Adoption Decree in Circuit Court. Once this is approved, the adoption becomes official.
Families that adopt from foreign countries have to undergo extensive background checks and legal proceedings, for good reason [too bad Governors don't have to undergo them also]. However, we can now make at least one step in the process more streamlined. While we strive to make every interaction a citizen has with state government positive [tell that to a guy named Frye], the best way to improve government service [especially for Mrs. Frye] is to reduce the time and money required to do business with the state. Since I took office, new technologies and a thorough review of state government operations have simplified everything from acquiring a hunting license to applying for the PROMISE Scholarship. This legislation, which I proposed in January in my State of the State address, is just a piece of our larger effort to support West Virginia families [if there's any justice at all, you'll be "supporting" what's left of the Frye family]. The sales tax holiday, Privacy Act [too bad you won't be benefiting from that one, Bob], and medical liability reform measures I have signed also are components of this agenda. Were constantly looking for ways to ease the burden of bureaucracy and improve state governments level of service.
My enthusiasm for this reform was reinvigorated when I signed this bill. I was joined by families who had come together [you mean there are some you haven't wrecked yet, Bob?] through international adoption. The smiling faces of the children and the love the parents showed for their sons and daughters reaffirmed my commitment to these wonderful families [yeah, we all know about your "firm" commitment to families].
From the quote above, I'd say at least three:
"I didn't come down with the last rain," Frye, a musician who lives in Hugheston in eastern Kanawha County, said. "I let this thing go on for months so I could get as much evidence as I possibly could.
"I had private detectives all over this thing. I've got pictures and documents -- all kinds of hard evidence."
Let's just say I'm having trouble finding any symapathetic victims here.
Think about this for a minute. Just what does it mean? What is "accountability"? Does it mean that when someone does something wrong, he/she has to pay a price? Or does it mean that all you have to do is mouth the words and a week later say "Can't we just move along"?
Isn't it really about time that some DemocRAT is really held "accountable"?
LOLOL!
Perhaps you are fortunate enough to have a spouse who has never done anything similar. Some of us haven't. And when we haven't, we have used every method available to get rid of them. And rightly so.
The "method" that I used got me uncontested sole custody of my four kids in the early 1970's. In the middle of the feminist movement. I was ruthless. And I was right.
Frankly, I hope the guy has gotten enough information to write a book. I'd probably buy it, just for the hell of it. Strike that. I WILL buy the book.
How's this? Best wishes to all of them.
That's about the best I can do right now. ;-)
Well, that's a possibility I hadn't even considered. You know, I'd give anything to be a bit more skeptical by nature, but I'm just a very trusting sort of fella. ;-)
Yes, indeed, what is so funny about that?
Was HE not the one who was getting some nookie?
Where I come from, nookie is given by a woman, and obtained by a man and never vice versa.
Is the term used differently in West Virginia?
