Greeley proves his points (BORN AGAIN?)
Daily Southtown (Chicago south side and 'burbs) ^ | May 14, 2003 | John Price

Posted on 05/14/2003 10:45:19 AM PDT by Chi-townChief

As a recent subscriber to the Daily Southtown, and realistically only a part time reader, I have only had the pleasure of reading Andrew Greeley's column a half dozen times and finally had to write in and thank the editors for carrying his column.

The more I read the padres' "thoughts and ideas" on politics and life, the more secure I feel in my own political and spiritual stance. As someone who voted for Bill Clinton in 1992 and as someone born, raised and educated in the Catholic Church and school system, I thank God I was wise enough to see the error in my ways long before stumbling upon the bittersweet anti-administration, anti-American rhetoric espoused by the columnist.

As a Republican/independent voter since 1994 and a nonpracticing Catholic since 1995, I am so very glad I can lay claim to making those decisions on my own, based on my observations and not in reaction to the brooding rants of someone who combines the worst of two subjects one never talks about over the dinner table -- politics and religion. If the country is in a petty mood led by a petty administration coming off a war of liberation in the most difficult to comprehend region of the world, what a step up it most be from the (Clinton years). Keep up the good work, padre. You prove more points than you can obviously ever comprehend.

"Fr." Andrew Greeley is about as Catholic as Tom Daschle.

This guy is barking up the wrong tree.

Not that Greeley is always wrong about his social observations on the Church - but greely is always dead wrong when it comes to politics.

I don't remember admiring Andrew Greeley. Not even in my distant, Roman Catholic, Chicagoland, Super-Liberal past.

He may be an expert on statistics and sociology, but his socio-political stances are too smugly predictable, especially since they are coming from someone who pretends he is open-minded.

Disclaimer: I have to admit I have read close to nothing of what he has written in the past 20 years. I think the last time I listened to him was when he was on Donahue -- about 20 years ago, too.

In other words, my opinion does not really count...but I sure enjoyed the chance to air it. Thank you for posting this thread.

Greeley? Doesn't the guy write these steamy novels?

Among the clergy, far better spokesmen for the Catholic faith come to mind. Rutler, Neuhaus, Stravinskas, Pacwa, and Groeschel, for example.

When I hear of Greeley, I always recall that the vow of poverty is not universal in the clergy and that I feel that he is ripping me off.
