A foreign war would be fatal to it because the army would have to reckon not only with the enemy in front but with a hundred million famished, infuriated peasants in the rear.

That basically sums up the war in Iraq. Pay attention, Hollywierd!

Thanks for the link! I'm familiar with some of Malcolm Muggeridge's work, and he is a good writer. I'm surprised to hear he was once a socialist.
