The Fighting Sioux: An Historical Honor

Ask Erik Enno what “Fighting Sioux” means. “Don’t be a victim,” Enno says, “fight victimhood.”

It means following the great Sioux warriors of the past, not denying their courage. Enno believes the Sioux people today must honor their fathers by being like them, not trying to remove their name.

Enno is Oglala Sioux. He is also an assistant basket basketball coach for the University of North Dakota, and works at the Ralph Engelstad Arena on campus. Enno is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

“Indians must approach our future in a positive, pro-active way,” he says. “If we don’t learn to do this, we are destined to feel like victims forever.”

Enno sees power in the name “Fighting Sioux.” He believes the name inspires young Indian students at UND and younger students back on the reservation.

He wants to recruit more Indian coaches and interns. “When an Indian student leaves the rez and comes to the non-Indian university community, naturally he brings fears and preconceptions. He needs leaders to teach him and guide him on how to deal with this culture shock.”

Yet the University of North Dakota won’t employ one Sioux Indian faculty member. There are a few Chippewa Indian staffers, a roving Arikara writer, and they of course want to remove the Fighting Sioux. But this isn’t the real problem.

The UND Indians Studies program is dominated by white women, Dr. Mary Jane Schneider and Dr. Bridget Hans, “transcendent” post-WWII Germans showing how much they love minorities, and how much better they are than those nasty, racist Americans.) BRIDGES, a non-Indian student association dedicated to removing the Fighting Sioux name and logo, is headed by a white woman, Dr. Lucy Ganje, an activist for numerous marginal causes.

White women saviors don’t make good role models for young Indian men, and there are very few Indian men students of UND. Out of nearly 12,500 students, only one third of the 2.9 percent of Indian students are men. UND offers one of America’s leading Indian Studies programs, but, the drop-out rate of Indians students is stunning. Why should they want to take Indian Studies courses from white women?

“Liberal instructors make personal careers out of teaching our young and impressionable Indian students that being a victim is an advantage in this society,” Enno observes. “They put a chip on the shoulders of their native students, making them victims whether they’ve experienced racism or not. This is no positive approach, and it’s dishonorable. Do we want to teach our children that simply complaining and protesting are their only avenue to overcome adversity?”

Athletics seems to be the only positive approach to being Indian on the UND campus. Enno certainly has the full support of athletic director Roger Thomas and head basketball coach Rich Glas.

Marc Ranfranz, son of the Flandreau-Santee Sioux president, is a hockey player for UND. Marc said, “It makes me feel proud when I come into the rink and see the Sioux logo all over." He loves playing in the 104 million dollar Ralph Engelstad Arena. "I see a little of myself in the logo, I guess," he explains. "When you get a chance to put on a jersey with the Sioux logo on front and your name on back, it's an honor."

But that honor is only for achievers, not for protesters. Enno sees the crippling effects of protesting, and tries hard to counteract it. He’s developing a program called Native Americans Coaching Athletics (NACA). This initiative is designed to encourage Indians to obtain degrees in Physical Education and Athletic Coaching at UND. Then they can go out to reservation schools and upgrade the athletic standards.

Nothing is more dear to the heart of a young Indian boy than athletic ability. Through sports a boy can feel like a strong warrior. He can gain self-respect, as well as social respect.

Therefore, the white women saviors of UND despise the whole Indian warrior image. They want to be the dominant “alpha” male. They don’t want men in charge of anything, therefore they are desperate to remove any image of such a male.

Enno counters, “In my roles with the UND athletic department I not only get the opportunity to create positive awareness and appreciation of our Indian culture and values, but I get the opportunity to recruit young Indians for UND athletic programs, Indians who probably wouldn’t get looked at if there weren’t an Indian coach on the staff.”

Fight on, Enno, a true Fighting Sioux.

What’s Up With Dark Men?
By David Yeagley
FrontPageMagazine.com | February 26, 2002

WHITE WOMEN ARE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL, desirable creatures on earth, judging from the way dark men crave them.

A black man loves white women, said Eldridge Cleaver, in Soul On Ice (1968) “Ain’t nothing more beautiful than a white woman’s hair being blown in the wind.”

But a black woman’s hair doesn’t blow in the wind. She only wishes it would.

Black scholar Noliwe Rooks, in Hair Raising (1996), says ever since black women were brought to America, they’ve been trying to look “white.” They try to change their appearance through skin whiteners, hair straighteners, and even bright blond hair dyes.

Psychologists Langlois, Roggman, and Berscheid (Science News, May 12, 1990) say two-day-old infants definitely prefer looking at white female beauty. The sense of beauty is therefore not culturally trained, but inborn.

Western fashion magazines sell the white woman’s beauty. In July 1993, Elle declared itself “the world’s biggest selling fashion magazine.” Elle achieved that status while featuring on its covers not voluptuous figures, but just the white woman’s face.

No other beauty can compete.

Mirabella (Jan. 1995) tried a Southeast Asian model, but with deeply curled hair, not the typically long, straight Oriental hair. The same issue also included a strange-looking “white” girl with a thick, blonde Afro.

A Caucasian “curl” in Asian hair? A bushy Afro on a white woman? It was a PC faux pas in full fashion, so to speak, a perverse, racist notion of “equality.” How can the colored races be equal with the white race if they have to be doctored up to look white?

Entertainment stars like Mariah Carey, or Janet Jackson hardly exploit the Negroid characteristics of black, kinky hair or dark brown skin. Yet they are claimed by the black race. Black can be beautiful, especially when it looks white.

The western fashion magazines simply cannot sell the American black female to whites. Elle even tried Sudanese Alek Wek (Nov. 1997).

But no white woman wants to look black.

Yet no white man dare say he prefers white women. That would be unforgivably racist.

So, as a dark man, I’ll say it.

Superior beauty is in the white race, with its scintillating varieties of color: red, brown, amber, golden hair... green, blue, light brown, gray eyes. In the darker races, everything is always the same, dark brown and black a beastly bore.

The white woman is the prize. To a dark man, marriage to a white woman is the ultimate sign of “equality” in the West. These days the white woman is expected to humble herself before the darkie, or at least to explore her own sexual excitement through him.

Of course, the mere sexual relationship of a dark man with a white woman is no accomplishment, yet it’s a beginning, and racial integration always leads to inter- marriage.

But Hitler was wrong in Mein Kamf (1925), when he accuses the Jewish male of a racial plot. When “the black-haired Jewish youth” finds himself sexually attracted to the fair Aryan maiden, there is no “clear aim of ruining the hated white race” through intermarriage. The Jew himself would breed out, for he is a small minority.

But the masses of darker races don’t fear extinction, because they are the vast majority. The white race is the world’s minority.

Its Judeo-Christian religion allowed the European Caucasian race to advance above all other people; but the darker races now encroach through integration and intermarriage, in the name of equality and diversity.

Pat Buchanan says that there’s something wrong with a race that doesn’t care whether it exists or not. In his new book, The Death of The West, he refers to my article, “What’s Up With White Women,” in which I write about a white girl who has no pride in her race or its accomplishments.

There are dark people who look forward to the end of “whitey.”

I once had terrorist-type neighbors, a black woman and a Middle Eastern man. They hated white people, and expected my American Indian family to feel the same way.

“Fifty years from now, there won’t be any white race,” the husband said.

Maybe Hitler was partially right on “the hated white race” thing, but there’s a big difference in being sexually attracted to a white female and plotting the murderous elimination of the white race.

Truly, the latter would be a crime against beauty, and such crimes are always at the basis of cataclysms.

As Edgar Allan Poe said, (and I paraphrase), Vice is ugly.

Good luck Mr. Enno. You will need it to get anywhere against a determined political correctness devotee.

I grew up in South Dakota, with the Oglala tribe's presence everywhere. Everywhere except school. Especially college. The two students from the tribe that did go to college with me (School of Mines & Tech, an engineering school) both dropped out in the first semester. Their tuition was free. They were both smart. Why didn't they make it? Simple: booze. Just like the rest of the tribe.

I'm Cherokee. Why can't your tribe get it's ass out of the bottle, and get into this society? You've had over 100 years in which to do so. Look at our tribe. Don't tell me that you can't make it in a peaceful world where there is no tribal warfare - the Sioux nation couldn't take on a platoon of Frenchmen.

Either assimilate or become extinct. Don't blame the white man. Blame the drunken laziness of your braves, your elders, and your women. No one is going to pull you up by your belt loops and make you fly straight - your people have got to do it themselves. The rest of the Indian nation feels pity for you - and that is a terrible insult to a warrior tribe.

Thanks for the ID there, El Gato. I'm Comanche, not Sioux. However, I love the Sioux, and I can't tell you how it hurts to know their real social problems. And they are not alone. Other tribes share the same problems. But other tribes aren't so famous.

To the Cherokee, let me say that your historical trauma is quite different from that of the Sioux. Circumstances were different, the times were different. Your people have been "settled in" a long time. The Sioux, and other plains tribes, are drunk new-comers. Hard to get oriented when you've had a beating, then been made drunk. Yes, made drunk. Indians had no idea what the social effects were. We couldn't look down a white, civilized road. We were drunk before we could even try to look down it.

It used to be against the law to sell liquor to an Indian (until 1954, in fact). Maybe that's one law that ought to be reinstated.

I take it your point is to show an inconsistency. Either that, or you're indicating a mistaken link? I'll check it out immediately.

As to the inconsistency, there is none. Think about it.
