Chevey Chase has commented on his Gerald Ford impersonation, surprise surprise, he wanted Ford to look stupid so that he would be voted out of office. He was a true blue, left liberal (I'm not sure if he still is, the interview he did, was saying everything in the past tense). He admitted that sometimes the impersonations SNL would use, would be politically motivated.

SNL never got enough ratings to matter, even back then. Ford was booted out fair and square. Leftover hard feelings from Watergate, a recession and rampant inflation (both corrected to a large extent by Ford, but not by enough to satisfy the public in time) meant a lot more to the average voter than Chevy Chase.

Plus, of course, Ford dug his his own grave with this:

"I don't believe ... that the Yugoslavians consider themselves dominated by the Soviet Union. I don't believe that the Romanians consider themselves dominated by the Soviet Union. I don't believe that the Poles consider themselves dominated by the Soviet Union. Each of these countries is independent, autonomous, it has its own territorial integrity, and the United States does not concede that those countries are under the domination of the Soviet Union."
Yeah.

I'm not sure if he still is...

I believe he did a fundraiser with Hillary Klinton not 2 weeks ago.
