Graduates Warned Of Cliches May 18, 2003 By ROSELYN TANTRAPHOL, Courant Staff Writer

HAMDEN -- Don Hewitt, executive producer of the news magazine show "60 Minutes," rallied Quinnipiac University graduates Saturday to steer clear of the sling-fest that has developed with the political labels of "liberal" and "conservative."

"Once they were meaningful adjectives," he said. "Today, they are little more than meaningless epithets - and how shallow our knack for expressing ourselves that whenever honest differences divide us, we invariably resort to hurling one of those two epithets at someone we don't like."

"Frankly, I liked it better when we called each other a sonuvabitch -....................

Aren't "liberal" and "son of a bitch" synonyms...at least for the men?

HAMDEN -- Don Hewitt, executive producer of the news magazine show "60 Minutes," rallied Quinnipiac University graduates Saturday to steer clear of the sling-fest that has developed with the political labels of "liberal" and "conservative."

"Once they were meaningful adjectives," he said. "Today, they are little more than meaningless epithets - and how shallow our knack for expressing ourselves that whenever honest differences divide us, we invariably resort to hurling one of those two epithets at someone we don't like."

"Frankly, I liked it better when we called each other a sonuvabitch - and the case for and against abortion was made in lecture halls and state legislatures and not on bumper stickers," he said.

Hewitt dropped out of New York University in 1942 to work as a copyboy for the now defunct New York Herald Tribune. "60 Minutes," the venerable news show he created in 1968, broadcasts its 35th anniversary special tonight.

Hewitt said journalists should take the lead in chucking these two terms that he said simply do not stand on their own, and invoked the gun debate as an issue that demands more complexity to define.

"The side of me that so-called liberal friends find conservative is the side of me that has no problem with a gun owner displaying an NRA sticker on the front window of his car," he said.

"The side of me that so-called conservatives find liberal is my incredulity that the same guy with the NRA sticker on his front window has a `support your local police' sticker on his back window. And nobody ever told him that it's the cops, more than anyone else, who are threatened by guns."

Hewitt, who will retire as executive producer of the CBS show next year, earned cheers with a few words about the worst clichés in television news. "They are: unless you're talking about the NFL, `team coverage,'" he said. "Unless you're talking about Jacques Cousteau, `in-depth.'"

"And unless you're talking about Bob Dole, `hard news.'"

Hewitt was the keynote speaker for Quinnipiac's 72nd commencement, which conferred degrees on 1,099 students Saturday. President John L. Lahey noted how much change the Class of 2003 observed - not only on the world stage, but on their own campus, which is tucked next to the hills of Sleeping Giant State Park.

Quinnipiac College became Quinnipiac University in 2000, the main library underwent a major renovation and this school year, the athletic teams changed from the Braves to the Bobcats.

As a friend helped him set his academic hood into place before the ceremony, Daniel Kerrigan of Broomall, Pa., reflected on the changes. "This is an up-and-coming school," he said. "I think this is the crossroads now, as to where we're going and where we've been."

"I've seen a huge change in the university in the past four years I've been here," he said, saying he believes students carry themselves a little differently now. "I think the academics have become more serious."

The LIBERALS took the debate OUT OF STATE LEGISLATURES with an unconstitutional Supreme Court creation of national law.

So, then I shall call the liberals by their proper descriptive terms: Socialist racketeers who piss-away every dime they can manage to steal from the working man; Marxist butchers, godless sodomy-loving sons-of-bitches, and wretched animal worshiping, race baiting, poverty pimps; homocidal sociopathic relativists, who murder innocent children at every opportunity, who work ceaslessly to advocate the culling of the elderly and infirm, and who would murder 3/4 of the world's population--in the name of mother earth/gaya, if they are ever allowed to deprive us of our guns.

That pandering, liberal-marxist son-of-a-bitch should be praising his Babylonian godess that he has not been hewn to pieces with a broad sword--which is the method I would highly reccomend for his not-to-distant "enlightenment."
