This will be fun to watch, I don't expect her to win but I'll bet she beats some of the guys, it's OK there's only one winner in each tournament anyway. B of A is sure getting their moneys worth, they have committed $30 million over the next 4 years, they're off to a GOOD start as a sponser, tons of press.

Suzy Whaley ready for Greater Hartford Open
CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) -- Suzy Whaley has been busy getting ready for the Greater Hartford Open since becoming the first woman to qualify for a PGA event.
By the time the GHO begins on July 24, Whaley will have played in four LPGA events, including a major, a Futures tournament and a U.S. Open qualifying event.
"It's very difficult to juggle it all," she said. "Part of the challenge for me is I don't have the ability to practice as much as I would like. That doesn't mean I'm not working as hard as I can in each area. At the end of the day, the time I commit will have to be good enough."
The mother of two young girls and the pro at Blue Fox Run in Avon, Whaley qualified for the event when she won the Connecticut PGA Sectional in September.
Preparing for the GHO has meant plenty of extra work for Whaley. Not only has she intensified her physical conditioning, but Whaley's had to travel to play a lot of golf since spring in Connecticut has been cold and rainy.
While Whaley became the first woman to qualify for a PGA Tour event, Annika Sorenstam will become the first woman to play in one when she tees it up at the Colonial next week. Sorenstam received a sponsor's exemption to play in the tournament. Whaley will be monitoring the action on TV closely.
"I'll be absolutely glued. I'll watch every single shot," Whaley said. "I'm already nervous for her. I want her to do great."
As for her goals at the GHO in July, Whaley would like a tee time for Sunday.
"I'd love to play four days here," she said. "I've been working pretty hard since November to just play two."
Enough of this garbage already. The simple fact is, that Annika is playing because she is already famous, yet not a peep is heard about the Woman that actually EARNED it. Pretty sad. |

The thing I worry about for her is that her putting can be so irratic. The irony is that why all the comentators want to talk about her short game which is good, they assume it includes her putting.
Well from what I have seen and the LPGA stats, she is a very ordinary putter in LPGA terms. So she could struggle on PGA tour greens.

FYI, this lady played from the forward tees while qualifying. It will be quite different when she has to play from the tips during the GHO.

THey showed a clip of Annika on the driving range with headlights... I think like the idea of her playing better now. One thing about golf, almost all the women are fugly.

Exactly, Annika is playing this weekend for two basic reasons:
1. She is the best woman player in the world right now.
2. The LPGA wanted the first woman to play in a PGA event in a number of years to be one of theirs not a woman club pro who qualified for the GHO playing in a sectional. She did play from tees about 10% shorter than the men, but I really think the untold story about this is that the LPGA wanted the attention to go to one of theirs and them.

Yes, she did. But she also turned in respectable scores at a second event..(the name escapes me.)
My point, still, is that someone who actually managed to qualify, is being ignored for some one that is getting to play, because of who she is, not what she has done.

If she has a problem with her long game, why not improve her upper body
strength? Am I missing something? I don't see very many overly buff golfers on
the range.
To: Fpimentel
She did. There was a story in SI a while back.

Annika is going to get clobbered, and she's not going to make the cut -- she'll be heading home before the weekend. The novelty will then be dead, and sponsors will no longer be able to draw in large (mostly golf-ignorant) television audiences through exemptions of female golfers. .....The cat will be out of the bag: the best women golfers cannot successfully compete with even average male (pro) golfers.

The simple fact is, that Annika is playing because she is already famous, yet not a peep is heard about the Woman that actually EARNED it.I heard plenty of peeps at the time. You did hear that she played from the forward tees at the time? That doesn't qualify as EARNING it in my book either.
(By the way, thankfully the rule has been changed and women can no longer play from the forward tees to qualify.)
