I drove thru the tornado struck area here in Missouri a couple weeks ago the day after it happened and I couldn't believe what I saw. Huge trees snapped over like toothpicks and not just a few, but hundreds - everywhere. It's amazing what they can do.

I live in OKC and have a storm cellar and have been in it for a storm 1X in 27 years.......the tornado missed by several miles.

Seriously, people think all Oklahomans must have lost their homes at least once or twice. I have only known ONE person who did (and they all survived, unharmed.)

I lived on the OklaTex line north of Wichita Falls for several years and saw several tornadoes. After the military and school, I moved to Northern Mississippi. I have seen and been near more tornadoes here that while in Texas. In Texas I could see them miles away, here they are on top of you before you know it. In May of 01' I was driving west on Highway 57 in McNairy County, Tn, and drove right into one and hydroplaned at 15 mph. As someone else said, you couldn't have drove a ten penny nail up my butt with a sledgehammer. Two weeks ago a funnel cloud went right over my home, the tail took out a couple of trees. I got a weather alert and a storm cellar which I keep clean and stocked with MRE's, radio, and water.

F5: The Mother of all Tornadoes, you might as well stand on your front porch and watch it, because it's probably going to be quite a last sight.

Not all that different from a Cat 5 hurricane, other than:

1. The hurricane's a lot bigger and lasts longer.
2. Hurricanes generate tornadoes too, just for langiappe.
3. With hurricanes, we enjoy the added advantage of danger of death by drowning.

Your season's almost over, isn't it? Ours is just about to begin.

>>Can lightening go through windows?

No. Glass is an insulator - very poor conductor of electricity. But staying away from windows in a storm is a good idea, because of suddenly flying debris crashing through them, or, in an intense presure change, they can blow out, or in.

No, I wouldn't say the season is even close to over...maybe at the end of June when it really warms up we can all relax a bit. Best of luck to you during hurricane season. I hear they are expecting more than last year.

Well during a regular storm I have not let them near windows just because of my fear of lightening striking through the glass. If the storm is bad enough that debris might fly through anything, I'll be found in the storm shelter. lol My son loves to watch rain and storms though so it's been hard to keep him away from watching.

You would think a man in his 50's and a man in his 30's would have more sense... guess not.

Did they accidentally vote for Buchanan instead of Gore in 2000, too?

Yes it can go through windows! The poster is just plain wrong. Lightning has just traveled miles through the air (a very poor conductor of electricity), a window will not stop it.

FYI: It's not the tires on your car that protect you either, it's the cage of metal that gives the lightning a path to the ground (through your tires) that offers you some protection in a car.

Indoor Activities: Things To Avoid Inside homes, people must also avoid activities which put their lives at risk from a possible lightning strike. As with the outdoor activities, these activities should be avoided before, during, and after storms. In particular, people should stay away from windows and doors and avoid contact with anything that conducts electricity. People may also want to take certain actions well before the storm to protect property within their homes, such as electronic equipment.

Thanks al:)

I'm from OK. The truest statement in the article is about how the weathermen seem to go crazy, scaring the hell out of everyone. It's so funny one year two of the three stations had installed some new big dopplar radar and could track where the storms would be almost to the minute over the next 20 minutes or so to give people warning. The weatherman on the one station that hadn't gotten this new stuff yet was so depressed, and it showed so bad. He was trying to draw with his cursor the track but it was not nearly as effective, we even thought he was probably watching the other stations for his info, it was hilarious, in a sad way of course:)

Tornado Ping!

Hey Vic, cut and paste this and email it to Mom and Dad. I'm sure with them just having survived the F4 that whacked Stockton, they'll enjoy it.
