It seems like the writer is trying to tell us: SOMETHING MORE DEVIOUS THAN YOU KNOW IS ACTUALLY GOING ON HERE -- when, in fact, it sounds to me like: grants, conseravative leadership and publishing programs. And, no quotation marks are necessary.

Yes. The writer is trying to tell us that conservative campus groups can ONLY survive with outside funding, that conservatism (i.e., anti-liberalism) is therefore not legitimate. Of course, the writer fails to mention the MASSIVE funding that liberal groups have from outside the campus, as well.

Don't forget the part where he implies that these kids are only automaton mouthpieces for the eeeeevil right wing.

Also, and I mean no offense, but when did Bucknell become an "elite" college? Maybe it's my West Coast ignorance kicking in.

Yes, I agree. While this article gives me hope for the future, it is also condescending crap.

They refer to the students as "right wing," for instance. Try reversing the politics: do you think they'd then refer to them as "left wing?" I don't think so.
