The security adviser of George W. Bush can imagine improvements in relations with Germany only without Gerhard Schröder. From FOCUS-information, Condoleezza Rice recently confided to a German in a conversation: The relationship Bush-Schröder will never be what it had been and how it should be. Indeed, Rice emphasized: "We are taking pains to improve relations with Germany at all levels." She added, however: "But we are going around the Chancellor. It's best to ignore him."
Bush has reservations about Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs [Secretary of State, lj] Joschka Fischer (Greens) because of his past. Bush is of the opinion, "Fischer's résumé doesn't fit the Curriculum Vita of a statesman".
As FOCUS further learned, at a meeting with two dozen of German businessmen while on his Berlin visit last Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell complained that the German UN representation in New York had been, "the coordination center of anti-American resolutions" in the battle over the Iraq conflict. Powell criticized: "We understand what an election campaign is. This was too much, though." Friends don't do things like that to each other.

Fischer's past.. I thought I'd never hear anyone in the administration mention that.
Woohoo, Condi. You go, girl.

Yes, Fischer is a real piece of work. He basically fire bombed a police officer. He isn't fit to be dogcatcher.
It says a lot about those who would put him in a position of power.

I agree, and it's really not that much differtent from those that would put Al Sharpton in power, what with his history with the Freddies Fashion Mart arson/massacre and the Tawana Brawley fraud.

More coffee now.

There's a pic in a magazine of him kicking a cop in the head resulting in injuries. Since Fischer was 'protesting' nothing much happened to him. Wish someone could find that.

"He isn't fit to be dogcatcher."
I disagree; he might very well be suited for that.

>Yes, Fischer is a real piece of work. He basically fire bombed a police officer. So why are we recognizing Abu Mazen who organize the Munich Olympic massacre, and appears not to be interested in reigning in the Hammas terrorists?

life will get a lot easier when you stop looking for consistency in international 'statesmanship'.

I don´t think that it is the right of anyone except the people of Germany to decide wether the vita of Joseph Fischer is "appropriate" for a Minister or not. We do not judge about the past of US presidents, either (drugs -> WBJC; alcohol -> GWB).
Not Mrs. Rice, nor His Excellency, the President of the United States has the right to judge about Mr. Fischer.
Yeah, I take the right to judge on him, and I can imagine many more Greens (with a better past) to be worse than Fischer in the office of the Vice Chancellor and Minister of Foreign Affairs. Mr. Fischer has become a diplomat.
That does not say that I agree with his policy, but I accept that he is Foreign Minister and that he represents my country.
The people of Germany trust him, 80% believe he is doing a good job. Although I count myself to the 20%, I acknowledge, that my fellow-citizen have forgiven his faults, even the police officer who was beaten by Fischer.
As for the rest of the article: nothing new, except that our predictions are confirmed now by the media (some they the German source could be Governor Koch).

"appropriate" The word used in the article to describe Fischer's background was tauglich. Tauglich may machine translate to suitable, but not in the same sense as angemessen or geeignet AFAIK. Tauglich means "doesn't cut it" or not good enough" in this usage rather than "appropriate" I would say.
Bush, Rice & Co. from some things I've read, consider Schroeder a bumpkin with whom they don't want to waste their time talking to. I gathered from this article that they consider that Fischer is at about the same level.
Someone posted Condi's résumé a while back. I'd like to see Condi's and Fischer's résumés side by side.
They certainly have the right to decide how and with whom they negotiate international matters on the basis of their competencies. Arafat's a good example.
The people of Germany trust him, 80% believe he is doing a good job.
I've got to give you credit for posting that. That's a tough one to own up to.
My 2 Cents.
