TORONTO -- Two recent deaths in a hospital here may have been caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars) and more than 20 other people may have been exposed to the virus, provincial officials said Friday.
"We are assuming the worst," Donald Low, director of microbiology at Mount Sinai Hospital, said.
If the cases turn out to be Sars, they will signal the resurgence of the virus in Canada's largest city.
Canada is the country outside Asia that has been hardest hit by Sars, with 24 deaths since its outbreak in March. All the deaths have been in the Toronto region.
Health officials on Friday were investigating the source of five new possible cases of Sars, Canada's first new cases in more than a month. AFP

As I posted elsewhere, Chinese have traveled to far more places than just Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Singapore and Toronto. Someone somewhere is lying about SARS infections for economic reasons. If the truth is not told soon and the appropriate measures taken, the disease will spread like wildfire. Better to be poor than dead.
This is a VIRUS with no known vaccine. Drugs for bacterial infection will be of no benefit. A massive need for respirators to keep people breathing until they can recover (or die) will be the main item in demand in my humble opinion.

Thanks for the heads up. I wasn't too upset until I read the post about Singapore culling stray cats. Then, when I read that the cat welfare organization on the island was making statements criticizing the government's decision to take steps to protect the public, I did become enraged. This is analagous to people in the Middle Ages lambasting authorities for killing rodents due to outbreaks of Bubonic Plague.

The magnificent Canadian socialized medical system at work: killing lots of people and providing horrific public health care.
Note: no deaths in the US despite vastly more exposure from people coming from SARS regions.
Mark Steyn, the Canadian Voice of Reason, complains bitterly that SARS patients are left unattended in ER corridors for days on end, and death certificates were faked to cover up the epidemic.

Our government could be lying to us about it too. Wouldn't be the first time.
