Thanks. I remember hearing about the cutback right after 911, then it was dropped like a hot potato. Recently on FR someone was asking why it took so long for the jets to get there, and I responded that Clinton had cut back the bases. I didn't know how many though, so appreciate the information for future use!

On Friday Ben-Veniste revisited the topic again, complaining to NORAD chief Maj. Gen. Craig McKinley, "Given the awareness of the terrorist use of planes as weapons, how was it that NORAD was ... not better prepared to protect against the hijacking of commercial jets?"...during the brief portion of this hearing I watched on C-Span (before I couldn't take any more), Ben-Veniste read a list of incidents beginning as far back as 1993 when a light plane crashed on to the lawn of the White House, killing the pilot, and including others from around the world in the years up until 911 when planes were hijacked for political reasons. He claimed all these proved that there was ample evidence for the possibility of a 911 attack, and spent the next five minutes berating the General because NORAD had not refocused at least some of its surveillance to domestic threats instead of guarding exclusively against those entering the country from outside. It apparently never occurred to him that if clear evidence has been mounting from as early as 1993, Clinton is more culpable for wasting seven years in failing to refocus our attention than Bush is in letting seven months go by......
