It does somehow seem very appropriate to celebrate his birthday today.

Happy Birthday, Duke!!!!

I just watched a very interesting A&E Bio about the Duke, and I just saw The Shootist for the first time.

BTW, your screen name reminded me of one of my favorite John Wayne movies: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence

Great article.

I also did not know Jimmy Stewart lost a son in Vietnam. Jimmy was another great one, actor and American.

The New York Times called it (The Green Berets) "unspeakable ... rotten ... stupid."

The New York Times: "unspeakable...rotten...stupid."

I remember in high school we were showed a film which was narrated by the Duke. When he introduced himself on the screen, the entire male population of that classroom leaped to their feet and applauded.

He was my father's hero. Who will be the next one? Mel Gibson? I dunno. Maybe he was one of a kind.

They were two unusually good men, John Wayne and. Ronald Reagan. Both leave legacies to our good..

Yes, it is encouraging that men and women in entertainment rise to use their skills for the good of society and this country. Where is a John Wayne when we need him? Maybe God, instead of an actor, gave us George W!

Rest well John Wayne and may Ronald Reagan’s final days be as comfortable as possible.

As I sit at my computer I need only look up to a pencil drawing of the Duke with his tall hat and bandana around his neck. He is the cowboy that made all us younguns want to be the goodguy. He planted a seed in Americas youth that has prospered generation after generation. A legacy that we in turn can pass on to our children, a legecy of all that is great and good about America. Scum like George Clooney and the rest of the socialists in todays Hollywood can never reach the hearts of our great nation as did the Duke. He was truly one of a kind and I can never repay him for all that he has done for me personally even though I never met him. It was the Duke that reenforced the values my parents and my God would have me live by. Thanks Duke, and happy birthday from us all.

From Incommunicado by Jimmy Buffett:

**********

Now on the day that John Wayne died
I found myself on the continental divide
Tell me where do I go from here
Think I'll ride into Leadville and have a few beers
I think of "Red River" or "Liberty Valance"
Can't believe the old man's gone

Chorus:
But now he's incommunicado
Leavin' such a hole in a world that believed
That a life with such bravado
Was takin' the right way home

*************

My father owned his own business and worked long hours. Most times he was gone when we got up, and came home after we were in bed.

But he loved his westerns. On Saturdays, I would sit up with him until 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning watching John Wayne movies. They were some of the best times I had with him.
