The AF had made plans to decomission the Warthog before the first Gulf War.
After the war, the Army told the AF that is they dropped the A-10s the Army would seek to take them over and operate them themselves. This caused the AF to reconsider (Wimp Out).

I expect the same thing to happen again.
When the Army begins to talk about saving money by replacing some high maintainance cost attack helicopters with low cost A-10s the AF will go Bat Shit Nuts and reconsider.

Congress directed that the Air Force rid itself of the A-10 in 1990 in favor of the never ordered A-16 and turn them and their OV-10s over to the Marine Corps and the Army. Transferring them to the Army would have been an interesting act to watch considering the 1948 Key West agreement. However, that order was rescinded in November of 1990.

I hope you are right. On another thread about the new Chinese Tanks I jokingly asked if the Hogs would be hungry an hour after devouring a few columns of Chinese armor. Another Freeper said Yes. "The Hogs-Go ugly early"

The AF was more than willing to give the Hog to the Army, the problem came when the Army demanded the Force structure (manning), Maintenace, and support structure to go along with the planes. If it would have just been the planes (w/o pilot), it probably would have been a done deal.

Me too. Occasionally common sense does prevail. The plane is simply too practical to be disposed of. The Marines keep doing the same thing with their AH-1 Cobras. "They are too old we have to get rid of them.....but they work great so let's keep 'em."

Perhap this is the fallout from DoD Sec. Rummie reorganizing the Armed Forces...of course, the grunts get killed...the breaucrats get their $$$.
