Phoenix homicides are up 67 percent this year compared with the same period in 2002, a trend police are at a loss to explain.

As of last week, Phoenix police had recorded 105 homicides in 2003, up from 63 at the same time last year.

Police say a proliferation of drugs, gangs and people-smuggling from Mexico are partially responsible...

Gee, do you think???

Thank heaven most police departments refuse to cooperate with immigration, and if they do the immigration department refuses to deal with them...

Yakoff Smirnoff had it right, "What a country!"

You're right. If the PD is baffled by this crime, than they are pretty darn stupid to not figure this out.

There is a lot of truth to that. Look on AZ's sex offender site, you'll see a lot of people with 2 strikes in CA.

The Phoenix police numbers are based on Uniform Crime Reporting standards used by the FBI, which exclude justifiable homicides and deaths caused by negligence.

Since when. A homicide is a homicide whether it is justified or not, and has always been counted in this stat. This is to include self defense and police shooting deaths.

Police say a proliferation of drugs, gangs and people-smuggling from Mexico are partially responsible for the spike in murders, but they say it's difficult to determine why the numbers would increase so dramatically in such a short period of time.

Duh - MORE drugs, gangs and people smuggling!
