You're absolutely right. Even the famous self-made serial widows of the 19th century got marriage proposals from men all over the country, and that got a lot of adverse comment in the press and from the pulpit. The really popular women prisoners seem to be the women who have killed multiple men, generally their husbands, like Nannie Doss. I think even Martha Beck got marriage proposals, even though she was already married, weighed 300 lbs, and murdered other women and at least one child "for" her husband (at least in her mind that was the motive).
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and speculate :Most of the men who send marriage proposals and love letters to mankillers are masochists, who enjoy fantasizing about being abused by a beautiful woman (even though the women onto whom they project their fantasies usually aren't very attractive). Most of the women who try to link up romantically with womankillers are suffering from 'martyr syndrome' : They just know the love of a good woman (ie, them) can "save" that poor victim of society! Why, the fact he killed those other women proves that he's a hurt, abused little boy lashing out, and who knows what those other women did to deserve that!?! But the "lure of the celebrity" plays a role too. But that's just speculation , based solely on reading waaay too many true crime books. (I have about 400 volumes in my personal library alone.)My favorite TC authors are Harold Schecter and Colin Wilson.
