Georgia Football Star Passes On "Playboy" Offer
MetroSource newswire | 05/30/03 | Dom Dornbberg

(Athens, GA) -- A star player for the University of Georgia football team is turning down an offer from "Playboy" to pose for a picture for the magazine's All-American football team.

David Pollack, a defensive end who helped propel Georgia to it's first SEC championship in 20 years, says his religious beliefs are at odds with the magazine's content.

Pollack told the "Atlanta Journal-Constitution" that he is honored by the invitation, but can't square it with his faith. In Pollack's words, "when you talk to somebody about living their lives the right way and abstaining from sex until marriage, posing in 'Playboy' would send the wrong message."

Pollack, who is the SEC's 2002 Player of the Year, was one of 22 atheletes invited to "Playboy's" weeklong photo shoot in California earlier this month.

I'm far from being a prude and personally wouldn't have a big problem with being in the mag, but I really admire this young guy for sticking to his beliefs and turning down the offer.

Good for him!

I'm not a prude either and I enjoy sex as much as the next man but I would draw the line on posing in Playboy. Yeah the money's tempting but life isn't about money. Its about living up to the values you believe in and showing people its hip to be old-fashioned in this era of non-judgmentalism and moral relativism.

Chance33_98 - your willingness to go the extra mile is admirable. We'll all be indebted to you!

I am wondering, however, what is this world coming to when Playboy is starting to include pictures of MEN posing in its magazine. Is nothing sacred any more?

Yeah we used to know centerfolds were beautiful women. Is this for the gay market? Cause I sure as heck am not interested in a guy in the buff.

A new bi-sexual audience?

lol... Playboy put out Playgirl in the 1970s in the hopes of securing female readers. It flopped. Turned out women weren't as interested in beefcake hotties as men were interested in centerfold babes.

No. This is the preseason All-American football team article. They've been doing this for a long time. May very well date back to the '70's.

Yeah... people do read Playboy and Penthouse for the non-sexual content and interviews. Really. ;-)

They don't pose nude do they? I haven't read a Playboy for years, so I can't recall. I think the last one I bought featured the Swedish Bikini Team.

You know, after posting this I got to thinking and I remember lots of great articles and journalism from the '60's & 70's. I think I read a couple of Ian Flemming novels that were serialized.

There were cool articles on things men were interested in besides sex. Already a pipe smoker, I learned lots more about tobacco, pipes and cigars in Playboy.

Same thing with fine clothes, the latest stereo equipment, cars, photography and more.

Really I would have bought the mag WITHOUT the girls, but the eye-candy was a pleasant and >usually< tasteful compliment to the articles.

Yup... male nature being what is we are interested in looking at women even if they protest we're guilty of "lookism." The reality is their ego tends to be puffed up as as much as ours by their realization how much we like they way they look.

Good for Pollack! Wasn't there also another player who refused to appear in that sleazy magazine?

In fact I got the Swedish Bikini Team issue to show Wife. She though the beer commercial was cute and wondered if the girls were really from Sweden. I picked up the issue for the bios, and I bet it's still around the house somewhere. Might just go look for it later today.

Every couple of years, one or two guys decline the invite. They are still named to the team, they just don't have their picture taken with the rest of the guys. For those who don't know, it's a simple picture with all of the guys standing around in their jerseys. It looks more like a Gap ad than a Playboy shoot.

IIRC Playboy sued Playgirl over it's name when Playgirl first appeared so I doubt it was a Playboy operation.
