DUBAI, June 1 (Reuters) - At least one American soldier and two Iraqis were killed in a grenade attack on a U.S. tank in central Baghdad on Sunday, al-Jazeera television reported.

The network, quoting its own Baghdad correspondent, said the attack occurred in front of the city's main mosque. It said several more people were wounded. There was no immediate comment from the U.S. military.

I support the war in Iraq as well as anybody, but; when you invade a country (for whatever purpose), the people who live there aren't "terrorists". I wouldn't call them "freedom fighters", either, because they aren't fighting for freedom. But they are definitely "combatants". We have to stop defining-down this term as much as possible. Pretty soon, everybody with a grudge/disagreement against the government will be a "terrorist".

BAGHDAD, June 1 (Reuters) - At least one American soldier was wounded and an Iraqi killed on Sunday when a U.S. armoured vehicle was hit by an explosion in a northern Baghdad district, U.S. troops and local residents said.

The armoured personnel vehicle was parked in front of the Abu Hanifa mosque, one of the biggest in Iraq, in the staunchly Sunni Muslim Azamiya district when it came under attack.

First Sergeant Larry Caldwell told journalists at the scene that one soldier was wounded when their armoured personnel vehicle was targeted, probably with C4 plastic explosive.

In an apparent co-ordinated attack, the soldiers came under sniper fire from the rooftops of two buildings opposite the mosque.

Most of the recent attacks on U.S. forces in Baghdad have taken place in areas populated mostly by Sunnis, a minority in Iraq who dominated Saddam Hussein's government.

The Azamiya district was one of the last areas of Baghdad to fall during the war, which ended with Saddam's ouster by U.S.-led forces in April.

Residents said the soldiers shot and killed an Iraqi man immediately after the explosion as he walked towards the mosque to pray.

"He came towards us. We told him to get down. He didn't," Caldwell said.

U.S. troops have come under attack several times in recent days from Iraqis who resent their presence.

"They are bastards and deserved it. They make us feel nostalgic for the days of Saddam," said one local woman.

By the time journalists arrived on the scene, the armoured vehicle had been removed. The only evidence of the attack was a bloodstain on the ground.

Earlier al-Jazeera television, quoting its Baghdad correspondent, reported that at least one U.S. soldier and two Iraqis had been killed in the attack. It said unidentified attackers had lobbed two hand grenades at the vehicle after exchanging fire with its crew.

I agree with SJSAMPLE. Terrorist attacks are only such if they are aimed at civilions. Terrorisist use violence as a means of coercion for and against civilians. The Iraqis doing this are armed guerilla combatants and not to view them as such is a danger.

First off, “WE” did not invade, or conquer Iraq – A coalition of nations liberated the Iraqi people form an evil and oppressive regime.

To call politically motivated violence carried out by subnational groups; actions that threaten the stability and unity of a free people; perpetrated against noncombatant targets (the attack occurred in front of the city's main mosque and civilians were killed and wounded); anything other then acts of terrorism is ludicrous.

The article makes no reference to who; or what; carried out the attack. It does not state that it was an Iraqi.

So who is to say that the "combatant" did not come from Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Syria, Morocco, Yemen or Saudi Arabia to get a little jihadi on.

But nonetheless I digress; It is a guerilla which resorts to terrorism.

The grenade attack wounded and killed Iraqi civilians standing in front of the city's main mosque. If those casualties were deliberate, than it is clear this was a terror attack (because injuring/killing civilians was part of their plan).
